Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link the disappearance of Harriet to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. The Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Great film. Didn't know anything about the books. It is a crime drama so some violence is to be expected and necessary to the story but I still could have done without the rape scene but well worth checking out.

Brillant stuff. Fans of the book will be pleased to hear that the movie does a really good job of doing the book justice. There are a few minor plot changes made for the movie but they worked well with the story rather than lessening it. It's a long movie at roughly 2 hrs 30 mins (I think, it felt that long anyway) but I think it's long running time is required for the story to be properly told. Salander is a great character and thankfully this shows a number of times in the movie. It got a round of applause as the credits rolled and rightly so, one of the best films I've seen so far this year. I'm really looking forward to seeing the second movie.
