"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo", to put it simply, is like a hybrid of "The Silence of the Lambs", "Se7en" and a really long game of "Cluedo". So basically, I loved it. Of course I'm only comparing it to these things in terms of theme moreso than story, and definitely not with regards to the film's characters. For it is the characters above all else that makes this thriller a unique viewing experience and it is all the better for it. The story features Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nygvist), a journalist who has been hired by Henrik Vanger (Sven-Bertil Taube) to find out what happened to his niece, Harriet, who disappeared forty years ago. A professional young hacker in the form of Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) is hired by Mikael to help in his investigation. As the two delve deeper and deeper into the Vanger clan's dark past, they put themselves more and more in danger. And that's just a general summary of the film, which really doesn't give its characters any justice in the slightest. The film is first and foremost a thriller, and a damn good one at that. But underneath it all it is riveting character study of... well, of a riveting character. Lisbeth Salander is a mesmerising character who goes through a complete journey throughout the course of the film. From her troubled childhood to her even more troubled present day self, this is a character that won't soon be forgotten. And major props to Noomi Rapace, who plays Lisbeth so naturally. To take a character like this and make her seem 100% real is something only the most talented of actresses could pull off. Though Noomi is of course the shining star of the film, I can't forget to mention the other actors who gave it their all. I genuinely don't believe there was a single bad performance in this film. Everyone was fantastic and their talent beautifully shines through under the direction of Niels Arden Oplev. I'll be honest, the main reason I watched this movie was because I wanted to see it before the release of next week's highly anticipated, American re-adaptation of the novel upon which it is based. I honestly didn't expect to like it so much and become so invested in the movie's characters. I'd be very surprised if David Fincher trumps Arden Oplev's adaptation, but seeing as he directed one of the movies I compared this to at the start of the review (Se7en), I have high hopes.

This was a fantastic film to see. It didn't try running quickly over any of the more gruesome parts of the story. All the characters were well pplayed and the sedish added the authenticity that these kind of ovies are usually missing being usually made by americans. Well worth seeing!

I have not read the books, so I can't say how it relates to them, but it's a decent movie. Only thing I was not too mad about was the VERY graffic scenes that are most certainly only for OVER 18s.

A powerful and exciting story that sticks true to Stieg Larssons novel. No need to make an English remake in my eyes.

Even though I read the book I still enjoyed this gritty violent adaptation. Good performances and nicely shot.

Never really understood the hype around either the movie or the original books of the series. The movie is still a solid example of the genre but people talk about the franchise as if it reinvented the wheel when it really is very formulaic. All in all its good but nothing you haven't seen done before and done better.

Started reading the book, and then the DVD came out,.. pretty close to the book (as much as I read),.. Little predictable, but Lizbeth is great

A dark noir thriller that is well constructed and shot. There is an unsettling undercurrent of malice throughout with some great performances from all the actors.

Not as good at the book. I think they tried to include too much of the book rather than expanding on some of the more important scenes. Disappointed ;(
