Movies.ie Critic Review

Taking story elements from three Tintin books of the 1940s (Secret Of The UnicornThe Crab With The Golden ClawRed Rackham’s Treasure), we follow our young intrepid reporter (Bell) after he buys an old model ship - only to find some very mysterious, very menacing men are desperate to get their hands on it. Leading the onslaught is the sinister Ivanovich Sakharine (Craig), who, it seems, will stop at nothing in his hunt for some long-lost buried treasure. Luckily, Tintin’s got his faithful terrier, Snowy, by his side, and the duo are soon on the high seas in a race to find the final clues.  Joining them is the drunken sailor, Captain Archibald Haddock (Serkis), who doesn’t yet realise that he’s a big part of the jigsaw. Keeping the home fires burning back in Brussels are bungling identical twin detectives Thomson (Frost) and Thompson (Pegg)…

THE VERDICT: Of course, 3D and performance capture are two very good reasons to be wary of this movie. As is the fact that Hollywood has a reputation for taking sacred cows and turning them into hamburgers. Once you get over the fact that most of the people here look as though they’ve had extensive cosmetic surgery just that morning, and that performance capture is, yep, just plain pants (“Hey, let’s cast Daniel Craig and then make him look like Jason Isaacs!”), well, The Adventures Of Tintin is something of a hoot. Fittingly enough, Spielberg hasn’t had this much fun since Raiders Of The Lost Ark – that 1981 film having prompted Belgian artist Herge to approve of the director taking his beloved creation to the big screen. Once again, Andy Serkis – the man who brought Gollum, King Kong and, more recently, summer box-office champ Caesar to life – pretty much steals the show, doing a rollicking good job as the sozzled and Sparrow-esque Captain Haddock. The chase sequences would make Buster Keaton weep. RATING: ****

What begins as a bracing adventure yarn for kids of all ages descends into a charmless, increasingly chaotic last half that leaves you feeling pummeled rather than energized

The graphics in Tin Tin are some of the best I've ever seen, it's up there with Legend of the Guardians! Plenty of laughs and action. Great adventure movie!

Not bad at all, quite a few funny moments (especially from Captain Haddock). The level of detail with the animation was quite impressive. Worth watching.

Gorgeously realized and action parked, with all the subtly and pacing of the original Hergé books, even if the animation does occasionally fall into the uncomfortable side of the Uncanny Valley.

Flawless animation if not a little creepy but TINTIN is just an annoying character who knows everything allows an alcoholic to drink when hes finally sobering up and can seemly have a job as a reporter without ever writing anything. But it is mindless fun with fantastic animation

I loved this movie, it brought me right back to my childhood, its full of suspense and action and Snowy is briliant! It's really set up for the sequel and I for one can't wait!

Loved Tintin books in my childhood. Was interested to see what the visionary Spielberg and Jackson could do with one of my favourite books. It was cetainly good fun and followed the book very closely. I look forward to the next movie in the series.

Excellent movie, the graphics were amazing best i've seen in an animated movie yet, rather predictable but to be expected from a movie based on a kid's cartoon.

Tin Tin is a huge success. Spielberg has lots of fun and takes everybody watching with him for the ride. This is a really fun movie. The characters are likable and the story/ pace nice and easy. Bell and Serkis have great chemistry. The motion capture, you will get people giving out, but it's brilliant. Flawless. No dead eyes in this film. What you see on the screen is beautiful. Im not a fan of 3D, but it actually works with bring depth to Tin Tin's world. I loved this film. You can feel everybody in it had lots of fun making it. Nice to see Spielberg and Jackson having fun, bring on the next installment.

For the first time since Avatar, The Adventures of Tintin is an attention-grabbing, fully-immersive, high-action 3D film which you should be able to watch without fear of a headache.

Thoroughly enjoyed Tin Tin, the CGI is frankly amazing and jaw dropping. The 3D adds to the experience and is not just a tacked on extra to fleece a few more euro out of movie goers. Something to note is that this is a kiddies movie and should be judged as such ... If ya do, it's a hoot and will be a family favourite.
