Movies.ie Critic Review

Scott (played by the hip-to-be-square Cera) is a 23-year old slacker who plays bass in the surprisingly good Sex Bob-Omb -  when he's not daydreaming about girls, that is. In particular, new girl in town Ramona V. Flowers (Winstead), purple-haired, roller-skated, and alluringly aloof (think Stephanie from Lazy Town, all grown up). Only trouble is, once our fumbling, mumbling anti-hero actually gets a date, he's introduced to her seven evil exes, each a martial arts master, and each ready to engage in a little manga madness with the mild-mannered, weak-limbed Scott. Who, despite the fact that he's a dreamer not a fighter, manages to go all Super Mario on their asses.

THE VERDICT: Based on Canadian Bryan Lee O'Malley's six digest-sized black and white comic novels (the last of which was released only last month), this might just be a little too cool for school. It's still a blast though.

Boasting the sort of on-screen graphics that would make Adam West hard, an actually rockin' setlist from Sex Bob-Omb (courtesy of Beck), kooky characters a-plenty (drummer Kim looking like a cross between Ellen Page and a pissed off leprechaun), witty one-liners (“If your life had a face, I'd punch it”), and just the sort of pop culture cool that you'd expect from the man who brought us SpacedShaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz, well, turns out, this might just be too much of a good thing. And not quite as Kick Ass as you want it to be.

    Apocryphal

I wanted to love this film and give it 5 stars....It was so much fun. quirky and unique. I did think that story wise nothing unexpected happened and every turn of the plot was overly sign posted well in advance. Also it was hard to see what Scott and Ramona were meant to see in eachother. Both are total narcissists.

Brilliant movie, totally loved it. Way off from left field, and takes a few minutes to get into the flow, but when you are there, its fab. Great performances all around, but my personal favourite was wallace played by Kieran Culkin.

Excellent film! I had little or no expectations before I saw it --thanks to Movies.ie for the tickets-- and I enjoyed it so much. The story is crazy and completely off-the-wall but packed with the most incredible action sequences in recent memory and tons of superb music written especially for the film. The cast did a fantastic job in recreating the graphic novel's characters and t feels truthful to the comic. Michael Cera is a funny lead along with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin --who steals some scenes with his promiscuous personality-- Anna Kendrick and Ellen Wong. The only in the cast I disliked a lot was Jason Schwartzman who always overacts his parts in a bad way. Certainly Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is an over-the-top circus for geeks and people who grew up playing Nintendo games, but Schwartzman's acting was pathetic. Anyway, his misdemeanor is forgettable because the film really catches your attention. Director Edgar Wright has become one of my favourite directors for creative entertainment. Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and now Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The man is a genius! [Warning: People who are not into video games and the like might not enjoy this film as others did; Its target audience is very specific].

Very funny film, with plenty of good laughs. Has a number of good what the heck moments as well, which add to the insane almost dream like quality of the whole film. Loses a star because it is slightly overlong, Anna Kendrick is sorely underused and a couple of scenes don't work quite badly, but they are small complaints as overall it is a very good film.

Fun, hilarious and a nice breath of fresh air. Although the scripting was a wee bit on the dumbed down side it's entertainment value shines through with stunning visuals.

Very strange & weird film. I wasn't sure about this film before I went in & I wasn't convinced by anything I saw during it. There are some very funny moments particularly from Routh. Evans also has a good role but Schwartzman is not as good as I had hoped. Poor man's Kick-Ass in my book.

Immensely enjoyable. Really funny, and beautifully shot to fit the story. Great performances from a fantastic cast and lots of geeky references (might go so far as to say nerdgasm :P ). Highly, highly recommended viewing as this is just fun from beginning to end :)

From the very being to the end, this film totally captivated me. Admitidly it may be more of a fanboy/girl piece d'art but it is of the highest quality. If you've ever been into computer games, comic books, anime, manga, stylized arthouse films, kitch teen movies, indie music silly romp or just something fun for a younger andience, then this delivers in spades. It is not a regular comedy but more of an off-beat love story of Scott Pilgrims personal journey to win his love and come to terms with his own lovelife and personal insecurities. Stellar performances from a mix of up-coming stars & some lesser known actors. While Michael Cera delivers a consistant (if not a self-styled character for most of his work), it is the directorial magnificensce which Edgar Wright stunned me. His visual interrpretation of a strongly visual book is awestrucking transposed to the screen. It raises the bar in terms of visual effects & interlaying computer generated effects on video footage. Coming down to a baseline result though, it entertains. And it a film culture of Hollywood remakes, it's a breath of fresh air to have original material packaged and delivered with proficiency. A+

If you like films, if you like comics and if you like old school nintendo computer games sprinkled with some Smashing Pumpkins refrences throughout, then your in for a proper treat. A brilliant comic come to life, as proper as a comic to film should be. Nearly frame for frame, sequence for sequence, a fantastic film that can appeal to many people. Comedy, Romance, some Sci Fi-ish bits. Just superb. Give it 7, 000, 000, 000 out of 10.
