So, what's it all about?

In the latest installment of the "Saw" franchise, Hoffman is seemingly the last person alive to carry on the Jigsaw legacy. But, when his secret is threatened, he must go on the hunt to eliminate all loose ends.

Movies.ie Review

Implements of torture, an elaborate game of cat and mouse, and a series of gruesome killings -- Saw V is same old, same old.

Story

Having inherited the mantle of the serial killer known as Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), Detective Mark Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) tries to cover his tracks while executing yet another elaborate torture scheme and staying one step ahead of FBI agent Peter Strahm (Scott Patterson), who survived his previous encounter with Jigsaw but may not be so lucky this time around. Like so many horror franchises of recent (and not-so-recent) vintage -- Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street -- the latest Saw doesn't deviate from the formula. Endlessly repeating the same rudimentary elements may spell big bucks at the box-office, forked over by the Saw faithful, but even die-hard fans will be hard-pressed to find something even remotely new or inventive here. In what must be an effort to mix things up, screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan revise (i.e. screw around with) some of the earlier film's plot twists with "new" flashbacks that offer different perspectives than was first depicted. If this is intended to provide surprise to the well-worn storyline, it isn't successful. It only makes a murky story even murkier.

Acting

Jigsaw may have met his end at the conclusion of Saw IV, but Tobin Bell is all over the place this time around, seen either in flashback or on television screens. With his menacing, whispery delivery, Bell can hardly be accused of sleepwalking through his role, but one suspects that the basic enticements for him here were top billing -- and the paycheck that goes along with it. The beefy Mandylor skulks his way through the one-dimensional role of Hoffman, while Patterson brings a bit of intensity to his role as the dogged Strahm. Betsy Russell, fondly remembered as a teen B-movie queen of the 1980s (Private School, Avenging Angel) plays Jigsaw's ex-wife, while Meagan Good and Julie Benz (in an ill-fitting black wig) portray two of the latest "players" in the latest Jigsaw puzzle. Shawnee Smith, Angus MacFadyen and Danny Glover, who all met their onscreen ends in previous installments, make token flashback appearances here -- to no discernible effect.

Direction

Mark Hackl, the production designer of Saw II – IV, who was originally tapped to direct the fourth installment, now makes his directorial debut. As one might expect, he retains the decayed urban design of the previous films (which he, of course, designed), and there are the requisite gallons of gore and guts for those who enjoy that sort of thing. What would the Saw films be without such visceral pleasantries? But, for all the technical ingenuity of some of the lethal booby traps, there's a distinct dullness to the proceedings. Saw V is appropriately gruesome, but it's not particularly exciting or suspenseful. As a Halloween scare-fest, it's all trick and no treat … and, yes, the door is left wide open for another installment. Enough's enough, already.

Bottom Line

Movies.ie rated this film 2 stars.

Definately the best of the last few Saw films that have been released. My favourite is still the first one by a longshot but this one has some good deathtrap scenes and the plot which revolves around a health insurance company is actually alright.

Yet another dull and repetitive sequel in what is fast becoming a dissapointing series that is about 3 films too long.

One of the better Saw films, with a great twist at the end and some imaginitive deaths.

A great installment in the Saw series. Moving some of the focus on to the killer cleaning up after himself as the Feds close in on him is a breath of fresh air. There's still the usual inventive deaths and gore but for a part 6 of a franchise it really is outstanding that it can still feel fresh. With the usual twists and turns, this is a must see for Saw fans. Bring on Saw VII

I was a fan of the past 5! I thought maybe they can still have a little creativity left. I was wrong and walked out. Terrible and I canceled a date with a hot chick because she said if it was too scary she would walk out. I played it safe took a friend instead and went home alone! They owe me! NO NEED TO PURCHASE THIS MOVIE FOR SET SAKE

If you are looking for an intense movie...this is it! Naturally, it is the same premise as the other Saw Movies, but with more twists and even more surprises. This particular movie actually had more gore than any of the other movies times 5! Enjoy :)

If you happened to see Saw 1,2,3 and 4 then the last thing you need to do at Halloween season is Saw 5. Again you can expect blood, guts and generally just visually repulsive things. The twist is here again but it lacks impact as everyone knows it's coming. Basically familiarity ruins this film and with recent word of the total number of Saw films to reach no less than 9 I can't help but think that the franchise will become very tedious very soon.

The entire saw franchise has been on a sliding scale. The bigger the number next to the name 'saw', the worse the film

Ok, but i started to get bored half way through. The twists were far too predictable this time out and the new killer somes across more as sulky than menacing, a poor performance.

Had previously seen all the saws. Wasn't expecting that much with this one, as is the norm for anything that has the number 5 after it. However i found it to be very watchable. Far weaker than the first and second installments but still holds some of the saw magic.

I'd like to state that I actually give this film MINUS 3 stars as not only was the acting horrific but the attempt to make it a character/story driven piece was laughable.God I wish I could locate the part of my brain responsible for memory and erase this film.

Have only seen the first Saw, so perhaps that's why I found this unbelieveably boring, not that it was exactly mind boggling. There was some gore and the games played were quite good with a nice little twist. But the main plot was pretty awful and I think we all just want to see the gorey parts and insanity riddled from Jigsaw, not 2 simliar looking guys (both big burly with dar hair and gruff voices, one of thme coulda been blonde!!) walking about in the dark talking to themselves...and they call that puppet crazy??

A bit disapointed with this film, maybe because I've come to expect so much thanks to the other four films. It's a good film but not so much a Saw, more like a detective film. Still worth seeing and I'll definitely be going to see the sixth!!
