Movies.ie Critic Review

Alice (Jovovich) is doing battle with the undead when, hey, she bumps into an old friend - her arch nemesis, the so-far elusive Albert Wesker (Roberts), to be more precise. Then there's lots of running. And fighting. And zombies. And Alice looking hot and bothered. And then just hot. Which bothers me.

THE VERDICT: Paul W.S. Anderson and his missus, Milla Jovovich, reckon they can milk their old action horror franchise one more time here, thanks in part to the return of 3D. Given that these apocalyptic babe on the rampage outings have always played like B-movies, that the fourth and probably far-from-final outing should be in 3D seems fitting. Maybe Anderson can have the next one play only in grindhouses?

It's as though Barbarella had been enslaved by Doctor Durand-Durand and forced to make mediocre horror outings for the rest of her life. Someone should try snapping their fingers when they get within earshot of Jovovich.

Visually pleasing if you can get over the fact that this seems to be something a bit more than a homage to The Matrix. The use of 3-D is gimmicky but good. The story which was never a strongsuit of this series is particularly weak here and seems to be scenes that Paul WS Anderson thought would look cool and then just strung them together. A film worth watching if you have nothing to do and theres nothing else on.

Another trip to the well ... and this one is pretty much dragging the bottom out of it. The story is more or less non existant, new variants of zombies are plonked in with no explanation (They can burrow through concrete now!?!), the tentacles of the Blade 2 vampires are directly ripped off here also, the evil boss is a direct clone of Hugo Weavings "Agent Anderson" from The Matrix with the same speech pattern and sunglasses ... this is basically just 90 mins of dark corridors, bad acting and zombies going "splat" in various ways ... and then setting up YET ANOTHER sequel. Enough already!!

Very enjoyable, a big improvement on the third outing too. If you liked the series, you'll really like this, if you don't like Resident Evil you won't, pretty simple.

Mildly entertaining action movie with remarkable 3D effects but with virtually no plot whatsoever. The dialogue was just a bunch of repetitive lines like "Here they come" and "Watch out!" which made the film rather tiresome. Milla Jovovich's acting is quite bad, especially during a video blog scene where she speaks to the camera; you could tell she's not even trying. The evil guy was a complete caricature, same for his performance. I think it's time for this franchise to go away or bring someone with ideas so audiences can be more interested in the plot and not the visual effects. By the end, the whole point of escaping the zombies is useless. Wait for the DVD. The only reason you would like to watch this film at the cinema are the 3D effects. Don't bother.

Basic survival plot but plenty of fun, great use of 3D tech pioneered by James Cameron (they could only shoot for 23 secs and then wait 2 hours before being able to shoot again). You can see that everyone involved wanted to deliver an entertaining movie and had fun doing it, and I did too. Movie magic's still alive.

I was really looking forward to this film. I'm a real fan of the first 3 and even watched all 3 in the run up to the release of this! Unfortunately everything that I liked about the first 3 is gone. The storyline marches on without explaining half of what it needs to; and at 90 minutes long it wouldn't have made the film too long to fill the gaps. Sadly though it drives on regardless. Even though it leaves itself open for another sequel I'd rather see this one made properly first...

Another enjoyable action film to add to the great Resident Evil series. It is just so wonderfully over the top, and the action is great. The 3D is excellent and really adds to the action. Is almost the pure definition of a guilty pleasure. A great ending as well.
