Adrienne Willis, a woman with her life in chaos, retreats to the tiny coastal town of Rodanthe, in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, to tend to a friend's inn for the weekend. Here she hopes to find the tranquility she so desperately needs to rethink the conflicts surrounding her--a wayward husband who has asked to come home and a teenaged daughter who resents her every decision. Almost as soon as Adrienne gets to Rodanthe, a major storm is forecast and Dr. Paul Flanner arrives. The only guest at the inn, Flanner is not on a weekend escape but rather is there to face his own crisis of conscience. This is the most cringe worthy movie I have ever seen - I roared laughing at the 'love' scenes. The end was pure Hollywood - I am annoyed I wasted my evening watching it - USELESS

To say that it's a movie just for the girls does a great dis-service to this movie... it's a movie for anyone who has felt the passion of love and longs to be reunited with it. A movie that reminds you of what truly important in life.

The romantic drama 'Nights in Rodanthe' is based on the Nicholas Sparks bestselling novel. Put simply, it's one for the girls, it's a weepie and if you like crying at movies, this one is made just for you. If you like Diane Lane and Richard Gere, you will love it. They both reunite here and this film is the perfect vehicle for showing how well they compliment each other. They were together in The Cotton Club and again in Unfaithful but in this movie, they display the chemistry necessary to make you really believe in them as 'a pair of star crossed lovers' on screen. Add to this a story by Nicholas Sparks and then you know you are going to be bawling and wailing before the film is over. Remember the Notebook? Well, this movie is aimed at the same audience - the girls!! This is, undoubtedly, a wonderful drama filled with romance, emotion and true love. Diane Lane plays Adrienne, a woman whose personal life is in turmoil. She is separated from her husband and trying to raise two children alone. While the children are staying with their dad for a few days, she agrees to manage the hotel owned by her friend Jean (played by Viola Davis). In this remote, picturesque location, she hopes to find the personal rebirth she so desperately craves. She needs time and space to rethink her life, should she let her husband back after he indulged in an affair? She only has to look after one guest and his name is Paul Flanner (played by the ever hunky Richard Gere). He is a wealthy, reserved doctor and is scheduled to stay at the hotel for only four days. Just as he has arrived, the townfolk are preparing themselves for a threatened hurricane and it's in this storm that love blossoms! While the storm rages outside, they batten down the hatches and turn to each other for comfort. It isn't long before they spill out their hearts to each other. They get merry on fine wine and good food and in one magical, memorable weekend, they fall head over heels in love. Dr. Flanner has arrived under a cloud of mystery and Adrienne learns that he has to face a crisis of conscience. He is struggling with a dark secret - he operated on a woman who died under his care and his life is tormented by this. He is staying at the hotel to visit this woman's husband. Once they have aired their emotional turmoil, they enjoy long walks on the beach as well as a few nights in the town of Rodanthe. The couple, who are both lonely and longing for love, spend evenings together dancing under the moonlight and eating nice meals. Add to that the fact that they are staying in one of the most picturesque, tranquil and stunning oceanside locations imaginable and the sparks fly. They both manage to put aside their own troubles for a weekend of companionship that changes both their lives. While this all happens over only 1 short, the ramifications of these few days spent together will last forever. However, this blissful whirlwind must end, Dr. Flanner must leave Rodanthe to reunite with his estranged son Mark (played by James Franco) in Ecuador. Adrienne returns home refreshed and relaxed, she's a new person but she has made up her mind not to reunite with her cheating husband, despite the pleas of her children. She wants to live her own life in her own way - happy. Adrienne and Paul exchange numerous love letters, which gradually lead us to the tragic end (I'll say no more but reach for the kleenex!!) Without a doubt, this couple work well together. They have magic between them and it works. They look incredible together, and we always believe they're having a good time in their quest for happiness and middle-aged love. Lane is natural, breezy and easy to warm to. She is perfectly at home in this role and it shows. I have always liked Gere, maybe I'm prejudiced as Pretty Woman is one of my all time favourites but I can't help it - he's forever gorgeous and talented in my eyes. I don’t have a bad word to say on the performance of either character. This genre of film is rare today, being overshadowed by big blockbusters, war dramas, comedies and horrors but there will always be an open space in my heart for an intense and emotional romantic drama designed to bring the audience to tears (or should I say the female audience!). Nights in Rodanthe follows the same basic formula of all Sparks novels, relying on the all familiar themes of love, death, tragedy and emotional upheavel. It's true to say that most of the enjoyment that comes from watching these films is the pure guilty pleasure we get from switching off our minds to the real world and sinking into a life where the problems aren't ours. This film was a winner for me, I felt I could connect with the tale on an intense and emotional level.
