So, what's it all about?

Clyde Shelton is an upstanding family man whose wife and daughter are brutally murdered during a home invasion. When the killers are caught, Nick Rice, a hotshot young Philadelphia prosecutor, is assigned to the case. Over his objections, Nick is forced by his boss to offer one of the suspects a light sentence in exchange for testifying against his accomplice. Fast forward 10 years. The man who got away with murder is found dead and Clyde Shelton coolly admits his guilt. Then he issues a warning to Nick: Either fix the flawed justice system that failed his family, or key players in the trial will die. Soon Shelton follows through on his threats, orchestrating from his jail cell a string of spectacularly diabolical assassinations that can be neither predicted nor prevented. Philadelphia is gripped with fear as Shelton's high-profile targets are slain one after another and the authorities are powerless to halt his reign of terror. Only Nick can stop the killing, and to do so he must outwit this brilliant sociopath in a harrowing contest of wills in which even the smallest misstep means death. With his own family now in Shelton's crosshairs, Nick finds himself in a desperate race against time facing a deadly adversary who seems always to be one step ahead

Movies.ie Review

Charles Bronson may have passed away, but the spirit of his Death Wish films lives on -- albeit in an absurdly twisted fashion -- in F. Gary Gray's (The Italian Job, Be Cool) gleefully over-the-top revenge thriller Law Abiding Citizen.

Taking a welcome break from his recent run of lame chick flicks, Gerard Butler (300, RocknRolla) stars as Clyde Shelton, a loving husband and father whose placid suburban existence is upended when a couple of mangy meth monsters burst into his home. Not content to merely burglarize the place, they proceed to butcher Clyde's wife and daughter as he lies in a heap on the floor, periodically losing consciousness after being stabbed several times.

The killers are soon apprehended, and a grieving Clyde, who somehow managed to survive the whole ordeal, eagerly awaits swift retribution from the justice system. Hoping for the grim solace that only the death penalty can provide, he places his faith in Nick Rice (Oscar winner Jamie Foxx), the hotshot district attorney charged with prosecuting the case, to do the right thing and see to it that the two killers fry.

Nick, however, has other plans. Seeing the case as anything but open-and-shut, and fearful that a not-guilty verdict in such a high-profile trial could derail his ambitious career plans (he sees himself as a Giuliani in the making), he opts to strike a plea deal: One man gets a death sentence, while the other gets a mere 10 years in return for testifying against his cohort.

Chastened by the unseemly bargain, Clyde takes matters into his own hands, delivering his own uniquely painful brand of vigilante justice to the sinister men who destroyed his family. But he doesn't stop there, not by a longshot. His grudge extends much, much further -- to the very heart of the justice system itself -- and he intends to bring the entire corrupt apparatus down, even if he has to do it while locked up inside a jail cell. Which is where he ends up after police nab him for personally imposing the death penalty on the convicted killers.

Indeed, Clyde proves to be something of a savant when it comes to killing people in creative, cinematic ways, employing exploding cell phones, remote-control machine guns and other methods to take out the various judges, attorneys and politicians on his hit list. Most amazingly, he orchestrates all of this mayhem from behind bars. Seriously, this guy's flair for novelty violence makes the Joker's antics in The Dark Knight seem amateurish by comparison.

The task of putting an end to all of Clyde's mayhem, naturally, falls on Nick. And this is where Law Abiding Citizen's fatal flaw emerges. Whereas Gray, Butler and virtually everyone else seem to enthusiastically embrace the utter ridiculousness of it all, Foxx plays it determinedly straight, as if he's the only one in the movie who isn't in on the joke. Watching his performance, it's almost as if he's making a different film than everyone else.

The right way for Law Abiding Citizen to end is for Foxx to administer an appropriately ironic death to Butler's character, utter something like, "I rest my case," and wink at the camera as he makes his exit. (Click here to read our exclusive interview with Foxx.)

I won't give any spoilers away, but suffice it to say, this is NOT how the movie ends.

Clever and a little disturbing. I did see it twice as it did merit a second viewing withing a short time. Not for the an 'action' audience but a little more of a 'thinking-mans' film. 'A-'

Not the best made film by any stretch of the imagination but still undeniably action packed and entertaining. Gerard Butler is perfectly cast as psychopath Clyde Shelton. Both charming and intimidating his performance is just what this film needed. Wasn't as impressed with the rest of the cast. Foxx seems to phone it in, just reading his lines so he can get his paycheck. But despite this I still really enjoyed the film. It's unpredictable, gripping, edgy and though the ending was a little underwhelming it fortunately didn't spoil anything for me.

An ok film. I felt it underutilised the actors. The ending is about my only issue, I won't spoil it, but I didn't like it, I can see why they did it, but that doesn't change the fact I didn't like it!

Not a bad film. Some of the scenes & murders are clever but the main twist is very implausible even for a film.

Disappointing overall. I liked the idea of the film but I am so confused as to why it was so poorly delivered... Unlike most I liked the ending so give it an extra star otherwise it would have been a one star rating.

Bad Points: Starts out well then it gets daft in the later half of the film. I can suspend disbelief to a point but this was asking too much. Jamie Foxx is the good guy but I found him quite unlikeable and Colm Meaney is a non-entity. Dialogue can be cheap & cliched. Good Points: For all its bad points its actually good fun to watch and Butler does a decent job of being the bad guy with a point to prove.

This film started out really well. Nicely paced and nicely performed with some great social commentary on the inadequecies of the American judicial system. But I found it waned towards the end, while the story kept a really good timing I felt that the believeability in the performances began to slip. Certainly is entertaining but I think it tried to be intelligent and lost it's way.

seriously a meh film. poorly scripted (there was one nice piece of social commentary but that was it)poorly acted. Colm Meaney looked like he had a carrot up his hole while playing the worst "bad cop" ive ever seen. Foxx was too busy thinking about the last time he filmed with an irish man and the fun they had to concentrate on what he was doing. I laughed when i wasnt supposed to i cringed when i was supposed to be horrified purely coz i felt bad for the actors. disjointed, badly directed and an ending that is a) non - believable and felt like the writers simply gave up and said what now? plot holes big enough to park a mobile home in - seriously im finding it hard to remember why i choose 2 stars. watch it if youve nothing better to do you might laugh at it a few times.... might

Really a 3 and half star film. Let down slightly I felt by the ending and I would have liked to see some more depth into the story but still very enjoyable. Good performance from Butler

Pretty poor outing for both Foxx and Butler, this one smacks of the actors liking the paycheck more than the script ... It tries to be smart by making the hero into the villian and the initial villian(s) in to the hero(s) but fails miserably. The direction is pretty bland and not much tension is injected into this distinctly average movie. Wait for the DVD if you can ...

The Negotiator was one of my fave films and was hoping for tension and surprises as that movie. Instead I got a Hero character that I despised and a Villain that I was rooting for. Sadly this film fell off the moral tightrope it was trying to cross. It'll be a good rainy day film but not very memorable.

This movie fails to deliver, so much effort went into advertising and publicity but boy did it suck! You are better off sleeping through this one trust me.

Really kind of silly, a lot of people laughed at parts that clearly should not have been funny. I found Jamie Foxx's character smug and unbearable... I wanted him to die a gruesome death by the end. It was a movie that felt as if a lot of the plot must have been edited away leaving a story that didn't really make much sense, a peril of a world where most movies are dumbed down for an American market I think.

A preposterous turd of a film. It loses it's legs 30 minutes into the film. I could not take this movie seriously and I am a huge fan of over the top action movies. I felt no sympathy for Gerard Way's character either. He is more of a monster than the killers at the start of the film.

Absolute pants, this goes way over the top in trying to be a clever and intelligent revenge tale, instead it just gets ridiculous.

I went into this not really knowing much about it and really enjoyed it, well worth a trip to the pics after some of the big blockbusters that were a just crap & disapointing and didn't live up the hype. The film moves along nicely and dosn't realy slow down throughout and Gerard Butler isn't bad as a man who dishes out revenge left right and centre. So if your loooking for an enjoyable trip to the flicks go to this, of course there are parts that don't make sense but feck it just leave your brain at the door sit back and enjoy the mayhem.

Fantastic film from start to finish and very clever indeed. Foxx and Butler are on top form in this action packed film that leaves you hooked until the end. Unfortunately, without spoiling, the end didn't quite live up to the rest of the movie and lacked thought, something with which the film seemed to be built upon until the close. Still a great film and well worth going to see though!
