Movies.ie Critic Review

Diaz is the hot, innocent bystander, June Havens, who finds herself caught up in the high-octane world of Cruise's top-of-the-range secret agent Roy Miller, the two soon jetting around some of the world's hotspots as the latter realises his life is in danger and the former goes from hostage to huggy bear.

THE VERDICT: Cruise turns on the charm as only Cruise can, but there's a hollowness now to the chiseled everyman persona that has served him so well in the past. And no amount of jump-cuts, high-octane set pieces and surprisingly brutal violence in this by-the-numbers hitman-and-her comedy thriller is going to distract from that career-stopping fact.

What a bunch of nonsense! The plot is dull and inconsistent. If you're willing to endure the silliness of a Tom Cruise action rom-com, go and see it. The odd thing is that they forgot it was supposed to be a comedy too and there are no jokes in it. Seriously, no one laughed when I saw it at Cineworld, despite the room being full of girls. Another low point of this film is Tom Cruise. I found it so hard to forget his real-life character to his screen persona. All the creepiness he evokes is still part of his performance. I was expecting him to jump all over the place and say how much he loved Katie Hol... I mean, Cameron Diaz. Why is it impossible for filmmakers to come up with characters that resemble real-life people? Why are writers so inclined to create characters who are so totally dull and lifeless? Knight and Day doesn't even work as a vehicle for Tom Cruise. Don't waste your time!

In Knight and Day average girl Julie Havens finds herself caught up in a feud between an ousted special agent and his old colleagues. While on the way home for her sisters wedding she meets the charming Roy Miller at the airport who ends up on the same flight as her. She talks to him on the plane but when she goes to the bathroom he kills all the passengers on board, lands the plane, drugs her and takes her home. She wakes the next morning thinking it was a dream, that is until she is picked up by some agents who want to talk to her about the plane crash and her possible involvement with Roy. Miller intervenes and frees Julie, after which they team up and start a full on war with the agency who once employed Miller. The trick to this film is not to take it too seriously. With the multi-Oscar nominated Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz both in starring roles with the brilliant James Mangold (Girl Interrupted, Walk The Line) at the helm it's be understandable to assume this should be taken seriously. But to enjoy this it is very important to just embrace the silliness. The script was clearly written without emphasis put on the story and that's exactly how Mangold made it. Sometimes this can get annoying, like with an on-running gag which involves Diaz being drugged by Cruise in sticky situations. After the second time this joke, which wasn't even very funny to start with, loses all appeal and you realise its just a method used by Mangold to get Diaz and Cruise out of some seemingly impossible situations without an explanation. At first you can let it go but it does eventually become more frustrating and you just wish they would stay in the action. Knight and Day is basically what this years disastrous Killers tried to be. Think Mr and Mrs Smith with less romance and far more action. In fact the film is actually driven by the action. It rarely slows down to take a break and leaves little time to find flaws before the action kicks off again. I've always loved these kinds of films. Fun, unpretentious, amusing and extremely entertaining. I've always said that I can forgive a film being poorly made or kind of crap as long as I find myself entertained. And that is the case with Knight and Day. Sure it has a lot of flaws. The story is useless and has been done before, the special effects were poor and let down some of the more promising action sequences and there are some really annoying little things, like Diaz being able to shoot after spending some time with an agent. But despite the flaws its one of those film that you find quite difficult not to like. And the main reasons why it is quite difficult to hate is because of the cast performances. Cruise, despite all the controversy surrounding his personal life is still a world class star and he proves that yet again here. He is cool, charismatic and surprisingly funny. I mean I knew he was capable of handling action, just take a look at the likes of Mission Impossible 3 and Minority Report but his brief cameo in Tropic Thunder was the only real indication he could be funny. Well Tropic Thunder and this. Without him this wouldn't be an action comedy, it'd be a stupid action film. Cameron Diaz, although I'm not her biggest fan I must say was pretty good. She handles both the comedy and the action really well and impresses alongside Cruise. Not to mention the pair of them strike up some electrifying chemistry. And the supporting cast are also quite impressive, with Peter Sarsgaard and Paul Dano putting some solid displays in. So all in all Knight and Day, despite its flaws is still an extremely enjoyable film. Cruise and Diaz are brilliant and really play well off each other. Like the rest of the cast they really have fun with their parts and by doing so make is all the more fun to watch. As an action film its a little underwhelming. The special effects are unspectacular and a lot of the better action sequences are spoiled by the on-running gag. But its fun, funny and extremely entertaining and I would recommend it for anyone who just wants a laid back, unpretentious and enjoyable trip to the cinema.
