Movies.ie Critic Review

Proceedings start off promisingly, as we're given a quick spin through the early years of Steven Russell (Carrey), a model son who does everything his parents ask of him, going on to become a Georgia policeman, the church organist, and the father of two lovely kids with the sweet Debbie (Mann). When Steven goes in search of his real mum, using police records, her second rejection is the spark to a new life though. Steven is tired of living a lie, and he's soon on his way to becoming an expert conman, and living the flamboyant gay life in Miami. Where he meets Phillip (McGregor).

THE VERDICT: This time last year, it looked like Carrey and McGregor might have one of 2009's most talked about movies on their hands, but then again, the latter has a habit of turning wine into water, no matter what kind of movie he touches.

Based on a true story, and directed by the duo who gave us the cool-to-be-crass Bad Santa, like that Billy Bob Thornton vehicle, I Love You Phillip Morris lacks heart. And tries way too hard. And it stars Ewan McGregor.

For some reason I was really looking forward to this movie (Dont know why Jim Carrey normally annoys the hell of out me). Anyway, I thought that it was a very enjoyable and interesting movie. Its one of those true stories that makes you realise what a crazy ol' place this world really is. The performaces from Carrey & McGregor are very good, for once Carrey didnt actually irritate me. There are some laughs but this film is not a flat our comedy so you may be disappointed if you watch it expecting one. Well worth a watch.

Jim Carrey is just brilliant in this! not his usual whacky character that I was getting sick of - alot of really good laugh out load moments ad Ewan McGregor is just a perfect side-kick for him. Really enjoyed it

Enjoyable, witty with great acting. I nearly teared up at a certain part but was laughing most of it. Ewan McGregor was fantastic in this. A good story with plenty of turns in it, perhaps maybe too many though. Worth a watch.

the hype machine fails to deliver...once again! being a rather big jim carrey fan, i was sold already at seeing him in the lead role. but then all the hype of "his funniest movie to date" had me hook, line & sinker. so i went along with the highest of hopes, expecting something more ridiculously and hilaroulsy silly than bruce almighty. but sadly, it was just not meant to be. maybe my hopes were too high, but that being said, the film is funny, and a rather interesting journey for not just any jim carrey fan, but any cinema goer. surprising is a word that springs to mind - as carrey is portraying a "true" story, so his reins aren't anywhere near at full extension, but he does manage to fit in some of the magic that we know and love. but not only due to the fact that it is based on a real story, but because of the subject matter, carrey seems a little "out of character", although he does play the role with a certain amount of fun, and regard. i'm sure there were many aspects to russell's character that appealed to carrey, but funnily enough, i found ewan mcgregor far more interesting and i really have not enjoyed his performances where he is cast as an american, when clearly an american actor would have been a far better choice! mcgregor played the role of morris with a bit more conviction, but then again, maybe morris is the more sensitive character! anyways, was an interesting experience, funny in parts, surprising, even moving, great to see a "controvertial" type story get mainstream coverage!

A strange but true story. I really enjoyed this movie. Not being a Jim Carey fan I didnt expect to like this film but was pleasantly surprised. Jim Carey is actually quite good in it & Ewan McGregor looks great.
