Movies.ie Critic Review

Proceedings start off promisingly, as we're given a quick spin through the early years of Steven Russell (Carrey), a model son who does everything his parents ask of him, going on to become a Georgia policeman, the church organist, and the father of two lovely kids with the sweet Debbie (Mann). When Steven goes in search of his real mum, using police records, her second rejection is the spark to a new life though. Steven is tired of living a lie, and he's soon on his way to becoming an expert conman, and living the flamboyant gay life in Miami. Where he meets Phillip (McGregor).

THE VERDICT: This time last year, it looked like Carrey and McGregor might have one of 2009's most talked about movies on their hands, but then again, the latter has a habit of turning wine into water, no matter what kind of movie he touches.

Based on a true story, and directed by the duo who gave us the cool-to-be-crass Bad Santa, like that Billy Bob Thornton vehicle, I Love You Phillip Morris lacks heart. And tries way too hard. And it stars Ewan McGregor.

Phenomenol performance from McGregor, Carrey does well too but McGregor steals the show. I found it a bit heavy going at times and also that it dragged a little. Worth a look but don't go expecting a comedy.

This movie made me feel sick. Not that I am homophobic or anything --quite the contrary-- but the jokes were so cringe-worthy that after leaving the cinema I went straight home to "unwind". Jim Carrey doesn't get tired of playing literally the same character all over again. His overacting gets on my nerves very easily and here, there's no difference. At least Ewan McGregor displays his usual shy charm that makes his acting so natural. We do feel for Phillip Morris but Steven Russell can go to jail and I wouldn't care. So parts were funny but not as funny as The Informant!, a movie I gave a negative review but that I now realise I have underappreciated. Anyway, I Love You, Phillip Morris is not a film for non-Carrey fans. It will become boring and over-the-top too soon and people will want to leave the cinema, as in fact happened in my local theatre. Wait for the DVD if you want to see it. You won't miss anything.

Not great at all :( Well it started off funny and quirky but a little too crude in places for me and completely unbelievable in the end!

Dispite other reviews. I enjoyed this greatly. A VERY fine performance from McGregor and Carrey was better than some of his previous films. Great script and soundtrack.

You either Love or hate the character, he can easily come accross as heartless and selfish but I'm still in awe that its a true story.

Not what I expected at all. I went in looking for a comedy and although this had some humorous parts, this is mostly a love story with twists and complications. Acting is great and I got more than I expected.

Disappointing movie which is neither funny enough for a comedy, or dramaic enough for a drama. Jim Carrey does give his all though.
