Genre:

Buffalo Grove High School valedictorian Denis Cooverman has had quite an academic career -- on paper, at least. Superlative student, conscientious young gentleman and patently obvious dork, Denis has played it safe and made it all the way to graduation day without ever having really experienced some of the joys of higher learning: breaking curfew, destruction of property, over-consumption of alcohol, fist fights, late nights, fast cars or faster women (actually, women of any sort). But all of that is about to change, and all by uttering five little words: "I Love You, Beth Cooper."

Hayden Panettiere | Paul Rust | Jack Carpenter | Lauren London | Andrea Savage | Samm Levine | Alan Ruck | Lauren Storm | Cynthia Stevenson | Shawn Roberts

Larry Doyle

Bit of a strange movie to come from Chris Columbus. If it was made in the 80's it might have worked but it all feels too unbelievable. It watchable and has its moments. She is super cute though so thats why it gets 3 stars.

I Love You Beth Cooper is about Denis Cooverman, a nerdy valedictorian who proclaims his love for cheerleader Beth Cooper in his graduation speech and ends up spending the best night of his life with her, a non-sexual night I might add. I didn't have high hopes for this film yet somehow I still felt disappointed after seeing it. Perhaps it was because the film had so much potential with a script by Simpsons man Larry Doyle adapted from a book by Simpsons man Larry Doyle. And with the experienced Chris Columbis (Home Alone, Harry Potter 1 and 2) behind the camera it really deserved to be a really enjoyable film. Unfortunately the same thing has happened here which has happened so many times before which is the wit, thrill and general enjoyment of a book fails to translate successfully onto the big screen. The film did have it's few beautifully delicate and tender moments among the mayhem which made me think that not all hope was lost but sadly the films flaws were far too predominant and turned out to be an unfortunate deal breaker. Firstly the film is packed full with clichés such as the bitchy best friends, the bullying boyfriends etc. The film also made the mistake of having Samm Levine of Freaks and Geeks fame pop up for a brief cameo which resulted in me waiting for the film to end so that I could watch the brilliant T.V show. The casting was clever for the individual roles but as for them working well together I wasn't convinced. I've never seen an on-screen loser as hopelessly feeble and awkward as our "hero" Denis Cooverman (Paul Rust). Hayden Panettiere also excelled in her role as beautiful cheerleader Beth Cooper. She of course rose to fame in a very similar role on hit T.V show Heroes so I wasn't suprised that she did well here, and I really would like to see her do something different. Her and Rust had no chemistry though, not even in the nicer scenes that the pair shared. I was never convinced that they would ever manage to get along, especially since he's such an annoyingly neurotic guy. The supporting cast were relatively good aswell. Jack Carpenter was pretty good as Cooverman's film-quoting gay best friend and he provided the laughs that Rust simply couldn't seem to do provide. Alan Ruck had a comparable effect as Mr.Cooverman. The two girls who played Beth's friends however were awful. They barely talked throughout the film and when they did it was never anything slightly humorous or even interesting. So all in all this was a pretty below average film which I will be giving an average mark of 3 stars because of the few poignant and beautifully captured scenes and the fact that the film is generally quite entertaining throughout. There were a few little things which annoyed me such as Beth causing a lot of damage by doing things like crashing cars into peoples homes. Also I thought that the opening speech, the most important scene of the film, was quite bad. Cooverman basically got up and insulted a bunch of people, including his best friend and Beth Cooper still talked to him after. I would've just thought he was a prick and ignored him. The direction was very good and most of the films aspects were good. The problem I think was the script and while many authors have had their books ruined by bad film adaptations Larry Doyle has no one to blame but himself for the parts of the film where it fell down.

Lots of laughs but the movie never quite get's going. There are some nice 80's movie references - best being the fact that Alan Ruck from Ferris Bueller's Day Off plays Denis's dad. Good but shame it didn't do Larry Doyle's book justice.
