Forget trailer, tv spots and clips, there is one thing which should act as the deciding factor as to whether you should go see Hot Tub Time Machine or not. That one all important thing is the films title alone. Hot Tub Time Machine. If you think this is a stupid, juvenile and inappropriate title for a film then this is not the film for you. If, like me you think this is a genius title then this is a must see. Because truth is Hot Tub Time Machine is just as stupid, fun and hilarious as you would think reading its title. Cited as this years The Hangover, the film follows friends Nick, Lou and Adam and Adam's nephew Jacob. When Lou is hospitalised following a suspected suicide Nick and Adam organise a return trip to a small town i which they had a fun-filled vacation years prior. With Jacob tagging along the three friends head to the resort only to find it has become somewhat of a ghost town. But they try to make the best of the bad situation with a load of alcohol, prohibited energy drinks and a hot tub. But when they wake up the next morning they find themselves back at Winterfest '84. And despite being warned by the mysterious hot tub repairman not to do anything differently the friends use the opportunity to perhaps see what could've been and maybe avoid their miserable futures. I really wasn't sure what to expect from Hot Tub Time Machine. As previously mentioned the title did make me think I should expect a stupid comedy film, but as far as I knew this could just be a very misleading title. But about 20 minutes or so in I got my answer, just after the group time travel. Doors fly open, the hot tub lights up like that cave thing from Lost and Craig Robinson utters the line "It must be some kind of... Hot Tub Time Machine" before looking directly into the camera. And the entire film is just like this brief moment; silly, cheesy but utterly hilarious. In a year of comedy disappointments with Cop Out, Date Night and many more failing to impress Hot Tub Time Machine has come out of nowhere to surely become a contender for comedy of the year. The story is refreshingly simple, not to mention amusingly and intentionally absurd. The film embraces 80's nostalgia, starring 80's icon John Cusack himself, while also making it the butt of many jokes. The film also boats one of the funniest on running gags involving on screen legend Crispin Glover and the mystery of how he lost an arm. It's really got everything normal teenagers and oddly immature adults could possibly want. There's cursing, hot women, nudity, a great soundtrack, rude and crude humour and 80's references galore. And it also has the best comedy cast since The Hangover. Pairing an 80's icon with three men who have been some of the best comedy support stars in recent years was a fantastic idea and it works wonderfully. John Cusack isn't particularly funny and is completely outshone by his co-stars, comedically at least. Clarke Duke, after impressing greatly in the likes of Kick-Ass and Sex Drive, keeps his good run going. He's in the film mostly as the voice of reason to three older men who want to change their futures, but he has his fair share of jokes. Craig Robinson, probably known best for his role on The Office US or his now famous doorman scene from Knocked Up also gives a great display. He and Corddry are the two funniest stars of the film. Also the two female stars hold their own too, both being charming and funny in equal measure. It's Rob Corddry however who completely steals the show. He is one of the most underused, underrated but funniest men in Hollywood and it's about time he got some bigger roles. He is without doubt the funniest of the four friends and nearly everything he said had me in stitches. As usual with him, most of his jokes are hilariously rude and disgusting but he also proved he can be quite witty too. So all in all Hot Tub Time Machine is without question one of the years finest comedies and generally a very pleasant surprise. It's uninhibited, laid back, basically just a film you can really just let go and enjoy. It's a lot better than the title suggests, and just as stupid and amusing. It succeeds over the rest of the years comedies simply because its a lot of fun, has plenty of laughs and it thankfully quite unpretentious. It will never be seen as much as it deserves, another effect of its bizarre name but if your up for a laugh then this is a must-see.

Just about scrapes the 3rd star, some decent laughs, nothing too original or gut bustingly funny ... some nice funny moments.

Obviously not very original but it is a fun time travel movie. It does what it says on the tin. Cusack is as reliable as usual, comfortable in the 80's setting and there are some real laugh out loud moments. You should watch out for Rob Corddry. He is brilliant in this, making a very unlikable character very funny and likable at the same time. Great film.
