Movies.ie Critic Review

Clint offers up three movies for the price of one, as we follow three lost souls trying to understand life after death. French TV news journalist Marie (De France) goes from being Olivia O’Leary to Mystic Meg after barely surviving a tsunami; San Francisco factory worker George (Damon) is determined not to use his psychic powers but his brother (Mohr) is determined they cash in; 12-year old Londoner Marcus (McLaren) is taken from his junkie mum when his twin brother is killed in a road accident.

THE VERDICT: As with Woody Allen, Clint Eastwood takes a no-nonsense approach to filmmaking – which means each cinematic icon breezily churns out a new mid-budget film every year. Eastwood’s hit rate has been somewhat higher than Allen’s though, even if, in some cases (i.e.Gran Torino), the critical acclaim wasn’t entirely deserved. Tellingly, Hereafter is the first Eastwood film in many years that the celebrity-whoring Golden Globes didn’t shower with nominations. Yep, it’s really that flat.

A little disappointd. Too slow moving and drawn out in parts. Damon does well but is not in it enough. My least favourite Eastwood directed film, everything else I've been a big fan.

Very slow paced film. The story breaks up into segments that try to have a meaning but can unsettle the viewer. In the end it just 'fades out' and your left to ponder!

After an excellent opening, this movies quickly turns into a dull and boring mess. You really do wonder how Clint Eastwood directed this. About half way through you wonder what the exact point of the film is. The ending is almost, so bad, it's funny, but it's not. Might have been a bit better if the Matt Damon part of the three plot structure was the only story as both Matt Damon and Bryce Dallaw Howard do their best with the horrible material, but even then it would have been poor. Here is hoping this is just a blip in the great career of Clint Eastwood.

Despite the best efforts of Matt Damon and Cécile de France, Hereafter is a hodge-podge of genres (disaster movie, romance, kitchen-sink drama) and clichés unsuited to Eastwood's style. Peter Morgan's script frequently leaps from ridiculous and dull, Eastwood tries too hard to find character development that isn't in the script, and the child actors are terrible. A pretentios mess that fails to offer ANY insight into ideas of the afterlife.
