"Happy Feet Two" returns audiences to the magnificent landscape of Antarctica. Mumble, The Master of Tap, has a problem because his tiny son, Erik, is choreo-phobic. Reluctant to dance, Erik runs away and encounters The Mighty Sven-a penguin who can fly! Mumble has no hope of competing with this charismatic new role model. But things get worse when the world is shaken by powerful forces. Erik learns of his father's "guts and grit" as Mumble brings together the penguin nations and all manner of fabulous creatures-from tiny Krill to giant Elephant Seals-to put things right.

Movies.ie Critic Review

Mumbles (Wood) is all grown up, and now has offspring of his own to worry and fret about. And worry and fret about him he does. Until he discovers that his entire colony of penguins – included his missus (now voiced by Pink, given that Brittany Murphy is no longer with us) - have, after a glacial shift or two, ended up trapped in what can only be described as a valley of death. Surely Mumbles will be able to save them? But what’s this, there’s a flock of seagulls intent on eating the penguins’ young ‘uns! And the concerted rescue attempt by a passing trawler crew has to be abandoned because of heavy snows! And Mumbles has probably got cancer, and doesn’t know it yet!

THE VERDICT: A sequel that, just like its 2006 predecessor, is a kiddie cartoon that’s far more Stanley Kubrick than it is Walt Disney, Happy Feet Two is another dose of existential angst wrapped up in a winter wonderland of furry critters and ethnic stereotypes. This is Frozen Planet as directed by Roland Emmerich and produced by Simon Cowell, as each new threat of death and distinction is met with yet another gospel-fueled cover of an r’n’b power ballad. Only this particular Glee club has very little to be gleeful about.

The darkness is all down to writer/director George Miller, an Australian doctor-turned-filmmaker whose obsession with death and destruction gave us the Mad Max trilogy. And that sick and twisted Babe sequel, Pig In The City. As with Rango, this is another middle-aged, cynical, stoner filmmaker toying with the mainstream, throwing up another poison slushie for the idiot masses. Still, it sure looks pretty.

Looks amazing, nice music selection, weak story line.

While 'Happy Feet' focused on the tap-dancing Emperor Penguin named Mumble... this one spends more time with his little son Erik... who is simply irresistible. If one agrees that penguins in general are cute, Erik ups the ante considerably.

I must be one of the idiot masses as I really enjoyed this. Hadn't seen Happy Feet 1 so had nothing to compare it with but having now seen 1 on the TV last week it follows the same formula. Music, dancing penguins, predators, do good humans that bail out when things get tough. If you ignore the not so subtle messages and enjoy it for simple entertainment it is worth a trip out with the kids to see. I loved the side story line with Brad Pitt and Matt Damon as two crill (or big prawns) wanting to break free from the swarm. If you like Robin Williams then you will love is normally over the top performances. Great cinema art it is not but it will put a smile on your face if you go with it. From a proud member of the idiot masses.

No No No This film starts with a ten minute musical score Right then I was going oh dear this is going to be bad. You know when you get a feeling of this is either going to be good or bad. My feeling was right it was bad. Probably about 25 minutes too long, even the kids wanted to play on my phone said it all really. The first outing was quite good, this follow up, Don't bother, buy it for the kids when its in the bargain bin in a year or so.

Visually rich but starved of originality Happy Feet 2 will pass the time but not wisely.
