This heartwarming true story is an American adaptation of a Japanese tale about a loyal dog named Hachiko. This very special friend would accompany his master to the train station every day and return each afternoon to greet him. Sadly his master departs one day, passes away and never returns. Hachiko faithfully returns to the same spot at the station the very next day, and every day for the next nine years to wait for his master. During his visits, Hachiko touches the lives of many who work near and commute through the town square. He teaches the local people love, compassion and loyalty. Today, a bronze statue of Hachiko sits in his waiting spot outside the Shibuya station in Japan as a permanent reminder of his devotion and love.

Not a lot going on in this but my God is it affecting. There has never been a more upsetting film since Homeward BOund when Shadow got stuck in the well (I was like 7). This film proves that if you make a film with dogs and them being loyal or dying or anything really then people will cry. I myself managed to compose myself but the same couldn't be said for the women in the screening, including the one sitting next to me. But apart from the films undeniable ability to conjure up some waterworks there isn't much to this. Richard Gere is good enough but dies before he can really impress. The supporting cast don;t do much for the film. None of them really manage to make an impact past the main stars (Gere and Dog). I could go into detail about every aspect of this film and outline how it is lacking in these ways but its not worth it so just know that despite the tragedy of this film, it is extremely average.

This is really upsetting- sweet little tale but bring your tissues! If you're not a dog lover, you'll most likely hate this.

Easy viewing, never exciting but deserving of attention. I did watch it alone so couldn't compare notes. The 'true story' elements are more than a little exaggerated though.
