With its rushed, jargon-pumped exposition, surplus of quarter-baked characters, stray narrative strands and generously dropped hints of things possibly to come, The Golden Compass is a movie that wears its franchise ambitions on its sleeve.

Being an avid fan of the books works against this film, it's missing a big part of the book and the cut storlyine makes it seem less extraordinary. Hopefully they don't get enough money to do the trilogy.

As an adaptation 2 stars...as a film in its own right, it holds its own compared to some of the weaker harry potters

Not a patch on the books but fairly ok if its taken on its own as a kids movie.

A very powerful fantasy film, aimed at a younger audience and for fans of the book but still a very enjoyable movie with some great and epic battle scences! Good stuff

This is very a dark story for a kids film. The film itself is very good.

Mildly enjoyable but falls short after so many years of Harry Potter's and Narnia adventures, do we really need another childrens fantasy land adventure?

I watched this not knowing anything about the story unlike the Harry Potter movies were pretty much eveyone knows the story before seeing that first movie. I have to say I enjoyed it very much, the effects are great and the spirit animals are brilliant. I hope they make the other movies now.
