Genre:

Erin's wry wit and unfiltered frankness charm newly single Garrett over beer, bar trivia and breakfast the next morning. Their chemistry sparks a full-fledged summer fling, but neither expects it to last once Erin heads home to San Francisco and Garrett stays behind for his job in New York City. Yet, neither is sure they want it to end. Meanwhile, Garrett's friends don't like losing their best drinking buddy to yet another rocky romance, and Erin's high-strung, overprotective married sister, Corrine, wants to keep Erin from heading down an all-too-familiar road. But, despite the opposite coasts, the nay-saying friends and family, and a few unexpected temptations, the couple just might actually go the distance.

Movies.ie Critic Review

Erin (Barrymore) lives in San Francisco. Garrett (Long) lives in New York. Nonetheless, they decide to give it a go. Being the hip young, wacky couple that they are. But it ain't easy, when her sister-in-law (Applegate) is anal, and his best friends are, well, typical sidekick assholes.

THE VERDICT:

There wouldn't have been much research needed for former couple Barrymore and Long here, and there's definitely an attempt here to do deeper and darker than your average romcom. So much so that, by the end, this feels like (500) Days Of Bummer. Overkooked, and undernourished.

This was actually quite a fun romantic comedy. Barrymore and Long have great on screen chemistry. And there's definitely some good humour for the guys in the form of Long's best friends. Better than the average rom com.

Best romantic comedy of the year, though not difficult considering what we've been subjected to so far. Barrymore and Long are the main reasons why it works. Their chemistry is electrifying and they bring this film the charm the rest of the rom-coms have been lacking. The films main problem is that it starts better than it ends. I loved it from the beginning, it was funny, enchanting and relatable. It delivered on both the romance and the comedy, with Long and his on-screen buddies providing most of the laughs. Then it started trying to be more serious which led the film into a dull, repetitive cycle. They find the long distance hard, they fight, they make up, they find it hard, they fight etc etc... Sadly this repetitiveness somewhat spoiled the film for me as despite its strong points it became too generic.
