Movies.ie Critic Review

Shakespeare’s classic tale of forbidden love is given the garden gnome makeover. Naturally enough.

THE VERDICT: This one’s been bouncing around Disney for over five years (with a total of nine writers chipping away at the script), Elton John’s Rocket Pictures having brought it to the Mouse House – hence the generous use of the handsome one’s back catalogue here. It’s a sweet concept, but, like so many British attempts at big-screen animation (Flushed Away, Valiant, etc), this belongs on TV. Around 4pm, on Stephen’s Day.

It's a fairly aggressive film, but Juliet hits these little moments of detail that make the movie entertaining and creative, doing Shakespeare and Elton John justice while creating pleasing comedy chaos.

I usually genuinely enjoy the movies i bring my niece to, but this just sucked. Only a couple of laughs throughout the whole movie, and the scenes where all the gnomes were dancing just made me uncomfortable...I did like the pink flamingo though!

Enjoyable Family outing movie. Simple Story - references to lots of other films. Great voices - Ozzy, Michael Caine, Patrick Stewart. Matched with Elton John rock'n'rollin soundtrack. Enjoy one and all !

Attempts at being original but falls flat as predictable and formulaic. Should have gone straight to DVD. However, the gnomes were animated quite nicely and the film features some good voice talent. I'd recommend you to rent it to introduce your kids to Shakespeare.
