Genre:

For three years after being forced from office, Nixon remained silent. But in summer 1977, the steely, cunning former commander-in-chief agreed to sit for one all-inclusive interview to confront the questions of his time in office and the Watergate scandal that ended his presidency. Nixon surprised everyone in selecting Frost as his televised confessor, intending to easily outfox the breezy British showman and secure a place in the hearts and minds of Americans. Likewise, Frost's team harbored doubts about their boss' ability to hold his own. But as cameras rolled, a charged battle of wits resulted. Would Nixon evade questions of his role in one of the nation's greatest disgraces? Or would Frost confound critics and bravely demand accountability from the man who'd built a career out of stonewalling? Over the course of their encounter, each man would reveal his own insecurities, ego and reserves of dignity--ultimately setting aside posturing in a stunning display of unvarnished truth. "Frost/Nixon" not only re-creates the on-air interview, but the weeks of around-the-world, behind-the-scenes maneuvering between the two men and their camps as negotiations were struck, deals were made and secrets revealed--all leading to the moment when they would sit facing one another in the court of public opinion.

Frost/Nixon is a superbly made film about a very interesting moment in history. The film is about the interview between David Frost and Richard Nixon in which Nixon was given the trial he never got concerning the Watergate scandal. The stunning performance, tense directing and gripping story all made this a very entertaining film. Worth every bit of recognition from the Academy with the few Oscar nominations it received. Intimate, tense and powerful this film will leave you with an unexplainable feeling that you sometimes get upon seeing a film that you know you won't forget any time soon. Langella, despite not looking at all like Nixon, makes up for this with an extraordinary display. Michael Sheen is brilliant aswell but for me he was suprisingly outshone by some of the less vital characters such as Kevin Bacon and Sam Rockwell. Well worth the watch. The story itself is worth knowing and when this is paired with the performances, the direction and generally well made nature of the film it makes for some truly unmissable cinema.

I don’t like Michael Sheen. I don’t like Ron Howard movies (for the most part). And I don’t like movies that wrap relatively bland fictional events in over dramatized fluff. So clearly Frost/Nixon was a match made in heaven for me. The whole premise of the run up to the infamous interviews being dragged out, fictionalized and thrown into a movie we already know the ending to really should have left me longing for the sweet release of death… or sleep. But startlingly, it didn’t. I actually enjoyed it. Frost/Nixon is the movie adaptation of the play from Englishman Peter Morgan which followed the series of live televised interviews between David Frost and disgraced former American President Richard Nixon and the events leading up to them. A smash hit on London’s West End, the play starred Michael Sheen as the eminently punchable Frost and Frank Langella as Nixon. Fitting then, that they should reprise their roles for this big screen version. Despite my dislike for Sheen, he turns in an excellent (if very occasionally a little too smug) performance as the cocky showman throughout, but is still eclipsed by the masterful showing from Langella. Those of you interested in the more factual side of things may want to give this one a miss due to the number of quite significant fallacies and fabrications used by Morgan and Howard to exaggerate the tension and sense of triumph throughout. Without spoiling anything for those of you who haven’t already seen it, let’s just say that a particularly important phone call near the end of the movie was included purely on artistic license rather than because of any real life call. But all in all you really can’t fault too much in the movie. It serves its purpose of keeping you entertained for its duration, rarely slacks off and is portrayed in such a way that you can’t help but feel empathy for Nixon, who was at the time among the most hated men in America. With a full repertoire of extras including 21 minutes of deleted scenes, a 23 minute long “making of” feature and 7 and a half minutes of footage from the original interview, as well as the no compulsory feature commentary you’ll certainly get your moneys worth whether you’re renting or buying. And that just gives me another reason to recommend this as a must see, even if you caught it first time around in the cinema.

This movie is very...very good. You might just want to see it, because of Frank Langella's chilling performance as Richard Nixon, but it also is very interesting, and extremely detailed

Slow enough, great performances but is the story that worthy of a full length movie?
