Luc Besson and Pierre Morel. These two names will mean nothing to most people, but for me these two men have in my mind become some of the finest makers of action films around. Besson is best known for directing Leon but a few years back he and Morel collaborated for the first time. Besson writes these brilliant scripts and Morel directs them into extremely entertaining films. They first came out in 2004 with District 13, followed 4 years later with the Liam Neeson starring Taken. These two films were critically mauled and as far as I can remember they received very few positive words from critics. But us average folks loved them and now they are back with From Paris With Love. The story follows assistant to U.S Ambassador in France James Reece. He has a happy life with his beautiful French girlfriend, a great job but his secretly dreams of moving full time into his side job of CIA operative. He is eventually given his first real assignment and is partnered with special agent Charlie Wax. Wax is a trigger happy, wise cracking and outright insane man who will test Reece's desire to be an agent to the maximum. It all sounds completely insane and quite simply it is but for films like this the story doesn't really matter. Nothing sums up what you should expect from this film better than its tagline. Reading it is the perfect thing to do before going to see this. Why? Because it has the ability to rid of any expectations or illusions you have and lets you know pretty much what kind of film you're about to witness. The films tagline is 'Two agents. One city. No Merci'. This phrase perfectly represents how fun, action packed and purposely ridiculous this while thing is. Now the film is by no means perfect and has a lot of flaws. The films many twists and turns come as a great surprise but this for once is a bad thing as the reason the film is unpredictable is that these absurd twists come completely out of nowhere. There is no lead up to them and it is just a nice happy moment then bam dead people and revelations. The dialogue is basic and unoriginal and was clearly not the most important thing for Morel and Besson. And regrettably story-wise the film really doesn't have much to offer. It's nothing new and in fact is pretty much just a shameless rehash of the typical 80's retro cop movies. It has the entirely different pair who team up to solve an interesting case. And the ending was horribly cheesy. Luckily there is more than enough action to make up for the flaws. The film also does a terrible job of explaining things. Wax and Reece go around Paris killing seemingly random targets whose connection to each other is never explained. I mean one second there are Chinese drug dealers then there's muslim terrorists and then someone close to Reece himself. There is no plausible connection to link these groups so you assume they aren't connected. That is until we find out they've been working together to carry out a political assassination. This twist we need to be hand fed as otherwise no one would be able to pick up on it. But fortunately for From Paris with Love I love action films and can forgive them being really poorly made and all that as long as they entertain me. And this is extremely entertaining. The action is relentless, non-stop and most of the time the action scenes come out of nowhere which makes them all the more enjoyable. The film was actually a sort of subtle comedy with more than enough action to remain gripping. I say this as at times I found myself accidentally laughing out loud in a cinema screen full of action freaks. The cast of the film are luckily quite good. If they put in terrible displays then the film would've been more of an ordeal than a film. Although I've never been a big fan of John Travolta he was one of the main reasons why I enjoyed this. Sure it wasn't the strongest performance but it was fun and the one word I would use to describe him here is 'wacky'. The ridiculousness of the character made it a lot easier to just sit back, let go and enjoy the film. Once Wax was introduced fighting with customs over some energy drinks I knew this was not going to be a serious film. Jonathan Rhys Meyers, accent aside was pretty solid. I'm still not convinced he's a good actor but I'm saying in this particular case he was decent enough. The supporting cast aren't bad but that is unfortunately all I can say about them. In other words they did nothing to excel. So all in all From Paris with Love is another Taken. Plenty of guns, explosions, twists and turns to make up for the many flaws. Sure for most people these will be fatal flaws which will completely ruin the film for them but for me they were minor glitches in an otherwise entertaining and gripping action thriller.

Brilliant. Great action film, Travolta is almost as good as he was in Swordfish. Sequel please.

In all honesty wasn't that bad, but since it's been almost 2 days since I saw and I can't even remember who played John Travolta's bitch, generally wouldn't be a good sign. The whole film felt relatively poorly put together, very choppy, and unfortunately Travolta did not suit the part at all, was far too much of a rushed job. Having said that it did have a couple of funny moments, and some good gags, but the action its-self was terrible. Best part of the film was at the end, but i'll leave it for you to find out... Enjoy!

About as close to being decent as the Mona Lisa has of being a grilled cheese sandwhich. Just awful.

Action junkies who thought Law Abiding Citizen was a masterpiece may find something here to enjoy, but even for them it could be slim pickings
