Movies.ie Critic Review

Yep, death still doesn’t like to be cheated, and so, when nice guy Sam Lawton (D’Agosto) shares his vision of a collapsing bridge with his fellow bus travellers, and convinces them to run, the survivors soon realise that their time might actually be up either way. Unless, of course, they can deliver someone else in their place. All it takes is a little push at the traffic lights…

THE VERDICT: It’s always hit and miss with horror franchises, both on an artistic level but, more importantly for those putting up the moolah, at the box-office. For no discernible reason, audiences can decide they’ve had enough of a particular horror kick – the last Saw and Scream outings dying a fittingly horrible death at the box-office. And just as arbitrarily, they can embrace a dead horse’s latest gallop around the multiplexes. Part of the pleasure, of course, is seeing how desperate a franchise can get, and the reanimation of 3D fits perfectly into horror’s bag of crude survival tricks. On the plus side, Final Destination 5 makes darn fine use of 3D. On the negative side, it’s the fifth outing. Of a not-exactly-classic horror franchise.

Final Destination 5 is a much-improved installment for the series on the heels of the terrible fourth film, The Final Destination, and an example of getting what you pay for in a suitably satisfying manner

I wasn't expecting much from this fourth sequel (the same basic plot structure is repeated again and again), but it turned out to be quite enjoyable. As the director gives you clues, it's fun trying to second guess how everyone is going to die. I recently became disillusioned with 3D, given the glut of muddy, cruddy conversions that were being churned out of Hollywood. Thankfully, Final Destination 5 milks the 3D for every cent and it works a treat. If this is the end of the franchise, then it certainly goes out with a bang.

So the second secret screening of Moviefest was Final Destination 5, a very big part of me was hoping for Contagion and was a little disappointed when this came on. I was a big fan of the first and even liked the second part as it linked back to the first in an intelligent manner, along with having some great death sequences but then came the third one and it left me feeling disenchanted with the franchise to the point where I didn't even watch the fourth one, so I really didn't expect much from this. I have to admit the 3D worked really well for the opening "premonition" and there were some other cool moments for 3D but I felt that the death scenes were overly complicated, to the point they were verging on ridiculous and were probably a lot more comedic than the producers had intended. The acting has a distinct haminess about it, one of the actors even tries his hand at impersonating Tom Cruise. I have to say though the link in to the first part at the end of the movie earned it an extra star as it was pretty intelligently done.

No mystery screening could have topped Drive from day one Still there were several gasps and a couple of claps when the titles for Final Destination 5 rolled. The boys punching the air and me thinking 'Really?'. If you've seen any of the previous 4 instalments you'll know how this goes, an attractive group of peeps escape disaster and death based on the hunch of one but 'death doesn't like to be cheated' and the following hour and a half sees them picked off in increasingly more horrific and gorified ways. From the outset this was tongue in cheek horror and the viral released before the movie shows you that was very much intentional. I have to admit this was some of the best 3D I've seen so far, literally In. Your. Face gore. Chocked full of big fat red herrings so that you never see the manner of horrific death coming. The entire movie is tense, edge of your seat stuff. FD5 was a huge hit with the audience, laughing right the way through with sudden shouts of 'Nooo' or hands up to faces just in time. I wouldn't have brought the lads to see this by choice but they adored it. Men. My attention was drawn to one character though Miles Fisher, I was convinced he was a Franco, no wait Tom Cruise, hang on, Christian Bale? He's big online for his impression of Tom Cruise for the Superhero Movie and was the brain behind the viral above. My advice? If Final Destination is your bag? Get to the cinema for this one, it's the best instalment of the 5 and has 3D that has to be seen to be believed, just go easy on the nachos beforehand.

Ok, so this film is never going to change your world but it does do what it says on the tin well. You going to see gory unusual deaths in 3D and you get that in buckets. Fans of the franchise should like the last few scenes too. :)

Shown August 14 as part of MovieFest. Death does not like being cheated and with this the 5th installment of the franchise you should know what to expect: a disaster avoided, providing only a temporary escape from an impending implausibly elaborate death. The slightly different angle this time is that if someone else dies in your place you might get to live out their time instead. I'm not a big fan of 3D but in a rollercoaster ride of a film like this, with sharp objects flying right at you, the 3D gimmick sort of works. The story is complete and stands alone but for those who have seen the whole series there is a nice nod to the first film near the end and also some highlights of the franchise. Not the greatest film ever but a lot of silly fun and something of a guilty pleasure.

I'm shocked that they have made another one of these movies, each one is pretty much the same as the other, except it gets more disgusting and ridiculous with every one. I'm a fan of 3D but this was just gross, and the opening and closing sequences are literally 5minutes of stuff flying at your face for no reason. The characters are totally one dimensional, you really don't care at all about their deaths, you're just waiting to see what creative ways they come up with to do it. It's boring, it's flat, avoid.

Finally a 3D blood riddled film where they take advantage of the gore and splatter you in the face. This is not a film for acting, story or believability, it's one for "Eww"! After seeing other 3D horrors, Bloody Valentine and Saw 5 (Or whatever the last one was)I'm glad a proper 3D blood splatter has been prepared. Gory deaths, somewhat laughable and some woeful acting. The main guy is a walking pair of eyeballs and grin while the second leading man is a young Tom Cruise. Neither (or any of the cast) can act, so its ok seeing them go splat!

Moviefest, early preview, if you liked the previous 4 movies (anyone??) then hey, enjoy! Personally I left the screening after the first formulaic “accident premonition scene” as did quite a few others at the screening. What tipped me over the edge to leave wasn’t the fact that the exact same premise/ stereotypical characters were being trotted out again (that I can deal with and in fact expected!) but the “acting” (cough cough) … made Fair City look Oscar worthy! Enough of the negative … the use of 3D was VERY good and plays well in the death scenes and the SFX obviously is where all the budget went and seemingly the ending is very good. This movie is for the fans of the franchise, a casual observer of the first two or three … then lost interest (like myself) maybe should avoid it.
