Based on true events, true stories and real heroines, Female Agents is a powerful rendition of the challenges that faced female World War II Resistance fighters, who were constantly in the shadow of men and accorded little importance for the roles they played in a violent and horrific war. The film is set in Spring 1944, on the eve of the Normandy landings. A member of the French Resistance, Louise (Sophie Marceau), flees to London after her husband’s summary execution. She is recruited by the Special Operations Executive, an intelligence service overseen by Churchill himself. She is immediately assigned to an urgent mission: the rescue of a British agent who has fallen into German hands. To successfully achieve the mission, she must put together an all-female unit. Respected actress Deborah François has been twice nominated for César award, the French equivalent of the Academy Awards. These nominations were for her performances in the Dardenne Brothers award-winning L’Enfant, and the critical and commercial success, The Page Turner. Writer / director Jean-Paul Salomé has numerous features to his credit, including the acclaimed, handsomely mounted Arséne Lupin. Both will introduce this preview screening, and take part in a q&a immediately afterwards, where audience questions will be welcomed. Salomé meticulously researched the subject matter of Female Agents, drawing on the expertise of historians and war veterans.

At no point does Female Agents begin to approach the muddy, bloody complexities of war represented by Black Book or Lust, Caution, films genuinely fascinated by the plight of women behind enemy lines.

A little slow and a little heavy handed in parts but overall a wonderful tale of intrigue and adventure. Good WWII trivia too ;-)

The film focuses on the essential part that French women played as spys towards the end of WW2. It highlights a part of history that is not greatly recognised or honoured by the history books. A powerful story with brillaint acting. If you like war movies, true stories and a cast of stunningly beautiful women, this is one for you.
