This Autumn vengeance is beautiful as Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek) stars in action adventure Colombiana, produced & written by Luc Besson (The Transporter 1-3, Taken and Leon) and directed by Olivier Megaton (Transporter 3). 1992. Colombia. Nine-year-old Cataleya witnesses her parents’ murder. Barely escaping the massacre herself, she takes refuge in the United States with Emilio, her gangster uncle…Fifteen years later, Cataleya works for him as a hit woman. Her calling card — an orchid drawn on the chests of her victims — is a message to her parents’ assassins. For Cataleya is determined to see her vengeance through to the bitter end… even if it means losing everything she loves.

Although a little slow moving and dull in places, there is still enough action to please throughout. Just could have been so much better. What it does have going for is a "hero" who is not always painted in the best light which is rare enough in this type of film.

The film was much less than what I expected. Although Saldana is brilliant, she was not used to her full potential. Although there are a couple of great action sequences, the film never troubles itself too much with the back-story and a repititive motif. The fact that a woman is an assassin should not make the movie less enjoyable.

Colombiana is every bit as slick and silly as you'd expect, but Saldana pulls off her far-fetched assassin with panache, whether wriggling through a police station's air ducts in a latex cat suit or dispatching a crook with his own pet sharks.

Given that Colombiana is both written and produced by Luc Besson, this could easily have been a sequel to Leon. There's a similar story set-up and Zoe Saldana and Natalie Portman are similar in age. Anyway, it's an efficient enough revenge thriller that will pass the time, but won't leave you wanting more. I would personally love to see Mathilda - a sequel to Leon. Maybe if Luc Besson would stop making kids' films and producing other people's films...
