Movies.ie Critic Review

Zellweger plays social worker Emily Jenkins, setting out to investigate why 10-year old Lilith Sullivan (Ferland) is no longer a star pupil, and no longer getting along with her parents. When Emily finds Lilith's parents trying to roast her in an oven, she reckons she's found out why, and soon has Lilith under her wing as she searches for a foster family. And that's when things start to get really weird...

THE VERDICT: Having been bounced around the schedules like a hot potato in a flaming bag since its original August 2008 release date, this unloved chiller is finally unleashed upon us. Not that anyone was actually asking about it. Except maybe Renee Zellweger's agent. She really needs a hit. This obviously won't be it.

Perhaps with a different star (Zellweger has that Nicole Kidman smell right now), a better director and a cooler script, this could have been a contender. As it stands, it's a stinker.

Relatively jumpy until you realise what the deal is and then gets a little silly, worth seeing at the cinema for full effects though

A warning for all the faint hearted and children: Case 39 is a film that drains you mentally and hits you psychologically. So, staying away would be a good option. But all those who like psychological thrillers, this one’s bound to test your fear factors and leave you drained and exhausted mentally. It’s not the plot that really works here but the cinematography, sound effects and performances. Child actor Jodelle Ferland is superb and plays her character with conviction. Renee Zellweger has always been a good actor and it’s refreshing to see her in a horror film after ages. She does a great job. We were done seeing her in romcoms. Renee’s real life beau and ‘Hangover’ star Bradley Cooper plays her reel life love interest in this film, but the pair has zero chemistry. Bradley’s role isn’t significant. He does what Martin Henderson did in ‘The Ring’, so you can’t really blame the actor for not making his presence felt in the film.
