If you saw the stunning, Oscar-winning Argentinian film The Secret In Their Eyes a few years ago, then Carancho is definitely worth a look. Not only does it share the same lead actor (the grizzled Ricardo Darin), but it once again proves that Argentina can create thrilling crime films as much as their Spanish cousins can do eerie horror films. The film focuses on an unlikely romance between an ambulance-chasing lawyer and a young doctor, as they meet at crime and accident scenes. The plot thickens as corrupt police officers and other parties get involved, building to a tense, action-packed finale. For the most part, it's well-acted and moves along at a tight pace. It isn't as memorable or as thrilling as The Secret In Their Eyes, but it certainly re-inforces the theory that South American cinema is going through a modern renaissance.
At heart an unlovely love story illuminated by sudden flares of violence, the film reeks of hopelessness and moral destitution, offering its lovers few means of escape
