Sacha Baron Cohen is not a one-trick-pony but he has his own brand of comedy and a string of odd-ball characters. Creating an imaginative character and placing them in the normal world highlights the good & the bad aspects of our society. A subtle social satire disguised in goof-ball slapstick poking fun at the fashion industry and peoples preduices. 'C++'

Although Bruno had it's moments it was somewhat disappointed following the excellence of Borat. Borat is still ridiculous and funny! But with less classic lines than Borat, having to escalate the shock factor was always going to be tough but Cohen seems to have tried to hard and missed the mark occassionally here. Still good for a quiet night in with friends! But not as re-watchable as Borat at all.

Some parts are hilarious, some parts really crude with no really pay offs, definitely not as sharp and funny as Borat

Borat, undeniably the most controversial film of 2006 and for me the funniest film of the 21st century so far. Now 3 years on comedic genius Sacha Baron Cohen returns with another great character, Bruno the gay Austrian T.V presenter. After an incident at Milan fashion week his show is cancelled and he finds himself being completely shunned by the fashion world. So he moves to America and desperately tries to become famous by any means. So while Borat was the most controversial and achingly funny film of 2006 I think that this film will become known as the most disappointing film of 2009. I'm not saying that the film was not funny, in fairness I did laugh more during this film than I have in any other film this year, apart from The Hangover. The problem wasn't the film, it was the expectations put on the film and the familiarity of the story and humour. Since hearing of this film myself, and I think every Borat fan couldn't wait to see it. Then the brilliant trailer came and I was going mad with the wait but unfortunately it wasn't nearly as good as I hoped. As I mentioned, familiarity ruined the films impact. For a start I expected it to be controversial and cringey but it was nothing we haven't already seen in Borat. The story was also similar, a foreign celebrity comes to America with a friend and tries to make it big. So straight off the mark there was already less Cohen could do in the film. He was a bit restrained and I think he was forced to resort to scripting most of his film. This may sound okay but it just made it a lot less funny and by scripting in parts the whole style and tone which we saw in Borat changed drastically. Cohen also included a stupid Hollywood/Disney ending to the film which was just way too cliché and it stuck out from the film like a sore thumb. This sadly was the last thing I saw and so my final opinion of the film was considerably negative. Even some of the stunts done in the film were like ones seen in Borat, and other crossed the line from funny to just plain repulsive. There were even some scenes where things became so sick or extreme that I found it basically distasteful to even chuckle. So it was funny but for me the films flaws were far too pressing and any positive features in the film were harshly outweighed by the problems. I generally think that Cohen's whole input to the film was poor. It was badly written in my opinion, he was good and wonderfully convincing as Bruno but the character wasn't nearly as likable as Borat and this was due to the actual character being unlikable and wasn't really Cohen's fault. Regardless I do think that he was bad and considering he seemed confined here I don't think the proposed Ali G film is a good idea as that is already an extremely well known character. The film's direction is hard to comment on here. On the one hand it was quite terrible, bad angles, shaky camerawork, basic shots and a general amateur feel but on the other hand it didn't feel much like a film for the most part, which may be the point and so maybe the direction was actually superb. I'm still not sure either way, but you can decide yourself. So all in all I found this to be a terrible disappointing film. If you like comedies I'm really not convinced that this is for you as it doesn't have the feel of a comedy and the humour is very difficult to enjoy. It is nowhere near as good as Borat and the thing I found funniest about this film is how little an impact it actually made and how quickly everyone forgot about it. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone really. There is at least one thing in this film that will disgust you, I can guarantee it and while some people do like to be disgusted now and then this often crosses the line. So basically if you plan on seeing this then be prepared for disappointment and resentment. The best thing to do would be to sit at home, don't pop down to the cinema or video store (depending on when and where this is read) and just sit back and enjoy the phenomenal Borat again, or finally.
