If you asked me just last week if Sam Mendes could ever make a film like Away We Go then my response would have been a blunt no. And boy would my face be red. Cause not only has me made a quirky, independent style film but he has made a truly exceptional one. Sure enough Mendes should at this stage in his career be making better films. What I mean is this is the kind of film that gets first time directors on people radar. But this isn't his first film. Perhaps he is trying to make up for the fact that he never got to make a film like this. He has always been a big director with equally big films. His actual debut was a 15 million dollar film starring Kevin Spacey and Chris Cooper. His second a gangster film with Paul Newman, Jude Law, Tom Hanks and Daniel Craig. And then Jarhead, another big budget film with big names attached. Than it was Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winset in Revolutionary Road. So Mendes really hasn't ever made a small film like this. The story follows a couple who are expecting a child. When they are told by the guys parents that they're moving to Europe for two years they realise their only reason to remain in their current area is gone. And so they move from city to city visiting friends and relatives trying to decide where to settle next. The film seems to be trying desperately to be like Juno or The Squid and the Whale, and almost succeeds and is a great indie film. I'm not sure what the film was meant to be as it never really strikes the right balance between comedy and drama. I mean the film is hilarious throughout then as the film progresses and approaches the climax it suddenly becomes a lot darker. This transformation happens far too quickly and quite simply wasn't introduced very well. Each city offers a new group of unique and entertaining people and the film is packed full of charming and touching moments which ultimately define the film. But to be fair without the main two characters there would be no connection between each city and its story, and could be just a series of short films. The cast of the film are wonderful and this is one of those rare occasions in which every member of the cast puts in a great display and there aren't actually any weak links. John Krasinski is brilliant in the lead role and this doesn't make him a respected leading man in Hollywood than nothing will. He is extremely funny, charming and the film quite simply wouldn't have been as good without him. Rudolph, playing Krasinskis pregnant wife, is good. She's not at all funny but she does put in a solid performance and to be fair Krasinski was funny enough for the both of them. As for Rudploh and Krasinski together they weren't quite as good as they were individually. The supprting cast are all fantastic too. Jeff Daniels, Katherine O'Hara, Maggie Gyllehaal and Allison Janney are the most memorable of them, but the rest are great too. So all in all I would hugely recommend this film as it is a fun, charming, poignant, hysterical and original film and I really enjoyed it.

I thought this would be another terrible trying to be Indie and just failing movie ...but it was really funny ..my favourite kinda new Indie movie ..I would say its both better than Juno and 500 days of summer ...even though before I seen it I thought it would be worse...

Funny, poignant and moving. Raises and answers the question of where we belong. Krasinski and Rudolph are just great together.

Sweet, little film with outstanding performances. I loved the story. I really don't know why some critics hated it, but I thought it was very easy to feel a connection to the characters. Actresses were particularly good, specially Maggie Gyllenhaal. Maya Rudolph, an unknown to me, was great as well; her range is superb. Go and see it!

I loved this movie. Of course most of the characters are total stereotypes but that's the whole point, it made the movie quirky and funny. There were a few cringe-worth moments alright but they didn't take away from the overall message of the film. Alexi Murdoch's soundtrack is another plus!
