Much more than just a comedian, Bill Hicks has become an inspiration to millions around the world. As a rebellious teenager, he discovered that comedy was a way to break all the rules and get away with it, but as he honed his skills, he realized it was also a way to open people's minds. Bill's comedy challenged the injustices of life in the late-80s, early-90s hangover that was American after the Reagan years, but his uncompromising approach met with controversy and resistance in America, and he began to find fame on the international stage instead.

a look into the life of the very talented comic who was taken from us way too young

Sheer brilliance. Contains some rare footage of Bill in his prime and uses nicely blended photographs to accompany the long spoken sections. A must for any Hicks fan!

As a massive fan of Bill Hicks, I wasn't quite as bowled-over by this film as I'd hoped I would be. I'd already seen pretty much all of the original footage and heard most of the stories and anecdotes (not the fault of the film-makers, I know, but a mild warning to other hardcore fans of Bill's work). I've written a full review over at my blog... http://bit.ly/aNIDhN

clever use of film footage, and family photos show us where the legendary comedian came from. Possibly a little long for a cinema release, but a definite DVD purchase

"Everyone comfy?", the face of William Melvin Hicks appears full frame on the screen to an eager awaiting audience. Instantly grabbing your attention, the haunting words from the man himself signify the beginning of a documentary that will bring you on a journey through a turbulant life full of laughs and heartache. It was filmed unlike many other documentaries which was both refreshing yet annoying at times. The overuse of Photoshop gave the impression of a forceful look on how the producers felt certain moments of Hick's life may have progressed. But thankfully this was not enough to 'ruin' the film itself. Stories from family and friends give a personal outlook into his life. Watching the comedians life change throughout the years evoked so many different emotions, the heartache from a first love to the realisation of his impending death to the joy of pursuing a career he loved and the recognition of the importance of family and good friends. This film delves into the dark side of the world of laughter. It's a spectacular look on a life out of the ordinary, I would recommend it to any open minded person who enjoys not only the humour of such an outstanding comedian but who can comprehend the ideas that Hick's introduced into his shows, causing his audience to think twice about topics that effect the world.

I brought my younger sister to this to try and show her what decent comedy is about. Its not just about trying to make you laugh (though that is a lot of it), its about changng opinions through laughter and I always felt Bill Hicks got that right. Unfortunatly with the youtube generation, people can become famous by pulling a gurney face and talking like a mouse so I was happy to hear by the end of the film that she really liked it and was moved by it too. Both of us were laughing throughout altough there was a fair share of sad moments, as with most comedians Bill led a life full of problems. Most of the story is told through animation of photos and voice overs which added a nice touch to the proceedings. It really got going when they showed his live shows as there his best moments. It was sad to see the deterioration of a man go from stardom at such a young age to a part of his life where accepting drinks from the audience became the norm and you could see that this was affecting his comedy and his lifestyle. The mushroom scene was a nice touch as it reminded me of times gone by where all you needed was friends, shrooms and a nice setting to open the doors of reality and take a peek to what lies beneath. In the end it was heartbreaking when he found out he had cancer but also somewhat rehabilitating as he set out to change things that would show the world what is really happening underneath all the bullshit you are made to believe. In the end he discovers that family is the most important part of everyones life and that they are the ones you can go back to when things go astray.

Even if you've never heard of Bill Hicks this film is well worth going to see. It does a good job of portaying who the man was and shows many of his interesting & funny views on life. I liked the style of the documentary its photo animated with a voiceover from family & friends and there are also plenty of snippets from his stand up shows. I read the book Bill Hicks Agent of Evolution a few years ago and thought that it was brillant. The movie obviously doesnt go into the same amount of detail about things like his personal life etc, but it is a solid enough documentary about a guy who was ahead of his time and had a tragically short life.

brilliant man, amazing legacy....even if this documentary had been made by muppets, it still would have been good given the material they had to work with.........however the guyswho made this deserve a round of applause for their dexterous handling of the story of Hicks life
