Part two of planned trilogy heading into production.

Robert Rodriguez is teaming up with Russian producer Alexander Rodnyansky for ‘Machete Kills,’ a sequel to the 2010 actioner ‘Machete.’ According to Deadline, an April start date is being eyed.

The second in a planned trilogy, the new film finds Machete “recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission that would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.”

“The fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance,” Rodriguez said. “Machete is truly a super hero and ‘Machete Kills’ will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time.”

Danny Trejo is expected to reprise the title role, with many of the original cast to return. The screenplay was written by Kyle Ward, and developed by Rodriguez and Marcel Rodriguez. Producing and financing the sequel will be Alexander Rodnyansky.

I'm surprised by this announcement... The ending of Machete hinted at a sequel, but the first film was mediocre at best and was pretty much a flop. It worked a lot better as a hilariously cheesy 2 minute trailer. I'd imagine that Machete Kills will go direct-to-DVD here...
