The Irish actor passed away today aged 64

Beloved Irish actor Mick Lally has died at the age of 64.

Lally was best known for his role as Miley Byrne in the long running Irish TV show Glenroe, but was also a well known stage actor. Lally was a native of County Mayo and began his career as a teacher before founding the Galway based theatre company, Druid, and becoming a full time actor.

Although Lally was arguably best known for roles on television and the stage, he also appeared in many films over the course of his career, including Circle of Friends, Alexander, How to Cheat in the Leaving Cert and the Oscar nominated The Secret of Kells.

Lally died in hospital after a short illness. As a tribute to his life and work, The Abbey Theatre will hold a standing ovation for Mick Lally after tonight’s performance of The Plough and The Stars.
