Mara and Sheen Join Daldry

Contemporary thriller begins filling out cast.

‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ star Rooney Mara and Martin Sheen (‘The West Wing’) have signed on to star in the Stephen Daldry-directed Third World-set thriller ‘Trash.’

Adapted by Richard Curtis from Andy Mulligan’s 2010 novel of the same name, the film follows three “dumpsite boys” – Raphael, Gardo, and Rat (played by newcomers Rickson Tevez, Eduardo Luis and Gabriel Weinstein) – who make a living picking through mountains of garbage on the outskirts of a large city. One unlucky-lucky day they find a leather bag, the contents of which plunges them into a terrifying adventure pitting their wits against corruption and authority.

Deadline hears that Mara will be taking the role of an NGO worker named Olivia Weston, while Sheen will play Father Juilliard.

Production is scheduled to kick off early next month in Rio de Janeiro with Brazilian actors Wagner Moura (‘Elysium,’ ‘Elite Squad’) and Selton Mello (‘Os Maias,’ ‘The Clown’) co-starring.

Working Title Films, PeaPie Films and 02 Filmes are backing the project.
