Live-Acton MULAN Eyes WHALE RIDER Director

Acclaimed New Zealand filmmaker Niki Caro (‘The Zookeeper’s Wife,’ ‘Whale Rider’) is reportedly in talks to take the director’s chair for Disney’s live-action adaptation of the animated classic ‘Mulan.’

Directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, the 1998 film told how the story of Hua Mulan (voiced by Ming-Na Wen), the legendary warrior from ancient China who disguises herself as a man so she can take her aged father’s place in the army and go to war.

THR, who broke the news of Caro’s involvement, add that ‘Jurassic World’ screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are providing the script, while Bill Kong, the Hong Kong-based super-producer behind Chinese like ‘Hero,’ ‘House of Flying Daggers,’ ‘Crouching Tiger,’ ‘Hidden Dragon,’ and ‘Monster Hunt,’ serves as executive producer.

Caro’s latest offering, the Jessica Chastain-led ‘The Zookeeper’s Wife,’ is released in Irish cinemas on May 5th.
