Kristen Stewart Takes Roles in CAMP X-RAY and SILS MARIA

Actress lines up back-to-back indies.

Mike Fleming over at Deadline is hearing that Kristen Stewart (‘On The Road,’ ‘Snow White And The Huntsman’) has secured the lead in writer/director Peter Sattler’s politically charged drama ‘Camp X-Ray.’

Stewart will play a young woman who enlists in the military to escape her suffocating small town, only to find that she is not going for a tour of duty in Iraq as she hoped. Instead, she has been assigned to Guantanomo Bay. Met with hatred and abuse from the Muslim men in her charge, she forges an odd friendship with a young man who has been imprisoned at the camp for eight years.

Gina Kwon and Sophia Lin will produce ‘Camp X-Ray,’ with David Gordon Green, Lindsay Williams and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein serving as executive producers.

In addition to landing the lead in ‘Camp X-Ray,’ the ‘Twilight’ actress is set to join Juliette Binoche and Chloë Moretz for ‘Sils Maria.’

With French filmmaker Olivier Assayas behind the camera, directing from his own screenplay, the drama centres on Maria Enders, a famed middle-aged actress who becomes obsessed with a younger actress (Moretz) who is taking on a role that Maria made famous. Stewart will take the role of Binoche’s assistant, a role originally earmarked for Mia Wasikowska (‘Stoker,’ ‘Alice in Wonderland’).

‘Sils Maria’ is scheduled to shoot this summer in Europe, with production on ‘Camp X-Ray’ set for late summer.
