Jonathan Herman Taking Us STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON

N.W.A. biopic finds new scribe and studio…

Screenwriter Jonathan Herman (‘Demonologists,’ ‘Conviction’) has been tapped to provide the script for ‘Straight Outta Compton,’ the long-in-development biopic of the influential hip-hop group N.W.A., says THR.

With F. Gary Gray (‘Law Abiding Citizen’) behind the camera, the film will trace the roots of the California-based group and their rise to fame. The group, active between the years 1986 and 1991, were one of Los Angeles’ successful rap groups and are widely considered one of the most important acts in the history of hip-hop. N.W.A. counted current superstars Ice Cube and Dr. Dre among its members, as well as drug dealer-turned-label founder Eazy-E, plus MC Ren and DJ Yella.

Originally in development over at New Line, the project was recently put in turnaround before being picked up by Universal.

Scott Bernstein and Sara Scott will shepherd the project for the Universal, with Ice Cube’s production banner Cube Vision producing, along with Dr. Dre, and Eazy E’s widow, Tomika Woods.
