John Singleton Planning Tupac Shakur Biopic

Long gesting biopic moving forward…

Variety has learned that John Singleton (‘Four Brothers,’ ‘Boyz N The Hood,’ ‘Higher Learning’) has been tapped to write, direct, and produce an untitled Tupac Shakur biopic for Morgan Creek and Emmett/Furla/Oasis.

Long-in-development, the film will follow the charismatic late rapper and sometimes actor’s rise to being one of the most popular hip-hop artists, as well as his murder following a boxing match in 1996 in Las Vegas.

Singleton, who directed Shakur in the 1993 romantic drama ‘Poetic Justice,’ said in a statement, “Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with. His passing deeply affected my life as well as countless people in this world. His life story is as important to my generation.”

David Robinson, James G. Robinson, and Lenton Terrell Hutton will produce alongside Randall Emmett and George Furla. Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, is on board as executive producer.

According to the trade, Singleton is hoping to have the cameras rolling by June.
