John Carney Steps Onto SING STREET

Music coming from Bono and the Edge…

Irish filmmaker John Carney (‘Can a Song Save Your Life?,’ ‘Once’) is set to team up with U2′s Bono and The Edge for his next project, ‘Sing Street,’ a semi-autobiographical movie about growing up in Dublin during the 1980s.

‘Sing Street’ centres on Cosmo, a 14-year-old Dubliner who has his sights on a life more exciting than his own. Dealing with the stress of his parent’s relationship, a drop-out older brother and the bullies at his new school, Cosmo forms a band and runs off to London with his girlfriend in search of fame and fortune.

The film, which will shoot this summer in Dublin, will be produced by Anthony Bregman of Likely Story, Carney via his Distressed Films banner, Kevin Frakes of PalmStar, Raj Brinder Singh for Merced Media Partners, and Paul Trijbits for FilmWave.

“John Carney has carved out a genre of his own — beautiful, soulful movies packed with longing, love and music,” Bregman told Screen Daily. “Sing Street is his Cinema Paradiso — the musical film answer to where it all came from.”

Bono and The Edge, long-time friends of Carney, will compose original music for the film.
