Joel Edgerton Leading SHANTARAM Adaptation

Aussie star to lead Johnny Depp-produced adaptation.

Joel Edgerton (‘The Great Gatsby,’ ‘Zero Dark Thirty’) is reportedly set to topline a feature adaptation of the Gregory David Roberts novel ‘Shantaram,’ with Garth Davis (‘Top of the Lake’) eyeing the director’s chair.

The film will see Edgerton playing a heroin addict who escapes a maximum-security prison, reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of India and eventually uses gun-running and counterfeiting skills to fight against the invading Russian troops in Afghanistan.

Inifinitum Nihil partners Johnny Depp and Christi Dembrowski, and GK Films’ Graham King are behind the film with the script being provided by Eric Roth (‘Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,’ ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,’ ‘Forest Gump’).
