James Franco starring in Howl

Indie company Werc Werk Works will produce and fully finance Howl, starring James Franco. An Allen Ginsberg biopic named after the late poet’s best known work and focusing on his trial after its publication.

Howl surrounds the 1957 obscenity trial that resulted from the publication of Ginsberg’s three-part poem, which teemed with drug use and sexuality (both hetero and homosexual). The film will also include an “animated re-imagining” of the poem.

Werc Werk Works CEO
Elizabeth Redleaf and president Christine Walker are producing along
with Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman of Telling Pictures, who will
direct from their own screenplay. Gus Van Sant executive produces.

Filming on Howl is set to start March 16th in New York City.
