Irish Opinion Fight Like Apes

Irish band ‘Fight Like Apes’ sit down to talk Movies.

Irish four piece ‘Fight Like Apes’ have been working hard since they formed in 2006. They’ve appeared on RTE’S Other Voices, played for BBC 6 music, toured the nation and most recently returned to Ireland after a successful showcase at Glastonbury festival.

Now the band members Tom (bass), Adrian (drums), “Pockets” (synth) and Maykay (vocals) are preparing for the release of the forthcoming album ‘Fight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallion’. Movies.ie caught up with Pockets (so named because of his tendency to “pocket” cigarette lighters) to talk movies.

Q: How often to you get to sit down and watch a movie?

Anytime were in the van traveling we generally have a healthy enough dose or movies to get us through the day. Its the only the thing that brings a slight sense of normality to touring.

Q: Tell us about the last movie you saw? (either in cinema, video, DVD or TV)

We were watching “Undefeatable” the other day at a gig we played in Darlington. A fantastic movie. Cynthia Rothrock gold. Probably the the measuring stick for bad acting. The villain is probably the most outlandish character I’ve seen in recent times.

Q: What is your favourite Irish movie and why?

I’d definitely go with “I went down” on this. I remember seeing it for the first time and thinking “Oh my god, Ireland can actually compete with the rest of the world”. It’s a hilarious movie with a really strong cast. Brenden Gleeson will always make me laugh. The script is sharp as fuck. Its all in all an incredible movie.

Q: What is your favourite movie of all time?

I would have to go with “Prayer of the Rollerboys”. What can i say, I love terrible movies! Any film with Corey Haim on rollerblades fending off futuristic neo nazis in trenchcoats is alright by me.

Q: What movie could you never sit through again?

The Piano Teacher. I’m glad I saw it. It was very pretentious, very “arty”, very sadistic and very much a waste of two hours of my life. Michael Haneke is amazing but let’s be honest, this kinda stunk.

Q: Describe your ideal movie cast… (actor, actress & director)

I’d go with Rutger Hauer, Alison Janney in a movie directed by John Carpenter (before he got shit).

Q: Have you ever cried during a movie? Which one?

I cried at the end of the karate kid the first time i saw it. I was welling up during Chasing Amy and Lost in Translation but hid behind my masculine glare.

Q: Favourite movie snack?

Popcorn with butter.

Q: Favourite TV programme?

The girl from tomorrow.

Q: Who would play you in the movie adaptation of your life?

Kurt Russell
