Irish Opinion Amy Huberman

Top Irish actress and star of ‘The Clinic’ Amy Huberman chats movies…

Having spent five years working on the hit Irish TV show ‘The Clinic’, Amy Huberman is heading to the big screen in the latest deadpan comedy ‘A Film With Me In It’. The film, which  also stars Mark Doherty and Dylan Moran, follows the life of struggling actor Mark on one particularly bad day. He’s just been through the ordeal of yet another fruitless audition for a bit part in a movie. With his long-suffering girlfriend (played by Huberman) about to walk out and his landlord ready to evict him he’s only got his best mate Pierce (Dylan Moran) and their joint ambition of writing a career-breaking film to sustain him. Life’s not easy, but things are about to get worse – much worse, and then someone dies and things get really bad. Movies.ie sat down with top Irish actress Amy Huberman to talk movies:

Q: How often to you get to sit down and watch a movie?

I try to watch a film at least once a week, whether it’s an old favourite or one I haven’t seen before.

Q: Tell us about the last movie you saw?

I went to see Man on Wire in the cinema; a fantastic biopic about the famous French tightrope artist who after years of preparation and painstaking planning in order to avoid the authorities, fulfilled his lifelong ambition of walking from the top of one of New York’s Twin Towers over to the other on a tightrope! His unshakable determination not to mention his captivating child-like sense of adventure made for a very entertaining film.

Q: What is your favourite Irish movie and why?

I just loved Adam and Paul. Any movie that can juxtapose humour with utter tragedy like that gets my vote. I also loved Intermission; I think any Dub has to appreciate that movie. And the jumper Colin Farrell wears in it? That costume director deserves an award for it alone!

Q: What is your favourite movie of all time?

I actually can’t answer that; it’s too difficult to choose just one. I’ve always loved watching old Hitchcock movies with my Dad. I’ve seen Rebecca a million and one times.

Q: Describe your ideal movie cast…

Brendan Gleeson, Cate Blanchette, Laura Linney, Maggie Gyllenhall, Ralph Fienns, Will Ferrell (for the comedy) and Josh Harnett (for the eye candy) and I’d have Baz Lurman direct it! What a mad mix?! Not even sure what genre that would end up fitting in to.

Q: Have you ever cried during a movie? Which one?

Absolutely. I’m an easy target; I’ll cry at pretty much anything. But films like The Pianist I’m just a gonner. Most recently I cried watching The Pursuit of Happiness; what a touching film.

Q: Favourite movie snack?

Popcorn and fizzy jellies

Q: Favourite TV programme?

I don’t really follow any programmes in particular. It sounds fairly morbid but Six Feet Under was one of my favourite series; fantastic writing, acting and portrayal of the diverse nature of both the human heart and mind.

Q: Who would play you in the movie adaptation of your life?

I’ll have to do something either controversial or worthy enough for a film to be made about my life so I’ll get back to you on that one!!

A Film With Me In It is in Irish cinemas now!
