Irish Film and Television Awards

“Dear John” tells story of John Tyree, a young soldier home on leave, and Savannah Curtis, the idealistic college student he falls in love with during her spring vacation. Over the next seven tumultuous years, the couple is separated by John’s increasingly dangerous deployments. While meeting only sporadically, they stay in touch by sending a continuous stream of love letters overseas — correspondence that eventually triggers fateful consequences.

Once again the annual Irish Film and Television Awards have arrived. The ceremony, which will be held at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre on Sunday the 17th of February, will be hosted by television personality Ryan Tubridy . So far celebs such as American-Irish actress Bo Derek (best remembered for  minimalist bikini and questionable, yet iconic, cornrows in the 1979 film ’10’) and her  partner John Corbett (Aidan from Sex and the City) are confirmed to present awards. Scifi fans will also be pleased to hear that Battlestar Gallatica star/Oscar nomineee Mary McDonnell  will be attending the event. Among the Irish talent nominated this year include actors such as Pat Short, Cillian Murphy, Gail Fitzpatrick, Saoirse Ronan, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Colm Meaney. The IFTA Academy will shortly announce its exciting inaugural Award for Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema which will be presented to a world renowned filmmaker at the ceremony.
