Hayao Miyazaki Developing Biopic of Zero Fighter Designer

Legendary filmmaker to tackle biopic of plane designer.

Twitch has word that ‘Spirited Away’ and ‘Ponyo’ director Hayao Miyazaki is in the process of developing a new animated feature that will focus on Japan’s most famous fighter plane and the man who designed it.

Miyazaki’s new film will be based on aeronautical engineer Dr. Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed the A6M Zero fighter plane that was used by the Imperial Japanese Navy in its attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II.

Studio Ghibli reportedly undertook a large-scale hunt for animators skilled at drawing aeroplanes to work on the feature. Miyazaki previously told the story of Horikoshi in the 2009 manga ‘Kaze Tachinu.’
