Check out the first look images for Steven Spielberg’s highly-anticipated WEST SIDE STORY, an adaptation of the 1957 musical about a pair of star-crossed lovers, played by Ansel Elgort and newcomer Rachel Zegler.
Rita Moreno, who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Maria’s best friend Anita in the 1961 version of ‘West Side Story,’ also stars and takes on a new role in the remake. Moreno will be playing Valentina, a reconceived and expanded version of the character of Doc, the owner of the corner store in which Tony works. She’s also an executive producer on Spielberg’s remake.
Inspired by William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ WEST SIDE STORY is set in New York City in the 1950s and focuses on the rivalry between a pair of teenaged gangs – the white Jets and Puerto Rican Sharks. The situation becomes complicated when a gang members falls in love with a rival’s sister. 1961s ‘West Side Story’ an impressive 10 Oscars, including best picture.
