TV shows we want to see on the big screen

We suggest other shows that need the VERONICA MARS treatment

The VERONICA MARS movie hits Irish cinemas this weekend, much to the joy of fans of the teen Private Eye. The movie was funded through Kickstarter, by fans who wanted to see their favourite heroine brought back to solve just one more mystery. With this in mind, we have gathered together a list of other TV shows we would like to see given the big screen treatment.

FIREFLY

Yes we know that SERENITY has already happened, and it showed us a side of River (Summer Glau) that was almost unexpected and entirely kick-ass, but even though we learned the mystery of the Reavers, we never got to see Captain Mal (Nathan Fillion) truly come to terms with the Browncoats’ defeat in the war, or Zoe (Gina Torres) mourn the death of her – and our – beloved Wash (Alan Tudyk). The FIREFLY universe has been expanded through comics and a role-playing game, but it’s pretty clear that every fan of the show would like to see the Serenity ride again.

THE MIGHTY BOOSH

It could well be that THE MIGHTY BOOSH was a product of it’s time, and that time may now have passed, but it’s still a delight to return to the world of the Boosh and relive the hilarious and surreal adventures of Howard (Julian Barratt), Vince (Noel Fielding), Naboo (Michael Fielding), Bollo (Dave Brown) and Bob Fossil (Rich Fulcher). The Boosh have reunited for one off shows, and Noel Fielding said in 2012 that he and Barratt had discussed the possibility of a Boosh movie whilst sledging. We still have hope, and our white cowboy boots in storage!

HAPPY ENDINGS

HAPPY ENDINGS – created by THAT’S MY BOY screenwriter David Caspe (don’t hold that against the show!) – followed the lives of six dysfunctional best friends living in Chicago. When the show, which starred Eliza Coupe, Elisha Cuthbert, Damon Wayans Jr, Zachary Knighton, Adam Pally and Casey Wilson, started off with a woman ditching her fiancé at the altar for a man on rollerblades, we knew we were onto a winner. ABC apparently didn’t however, and cancelled the show in its third season. We’d love to see the gang reunited for a bog screen outing, even though Pally is now in THE MINDY PROJECT, Cuthbert has a new show in the works and Wayans Jr has moved over to NEW GIRL.

MY NAME IS EARL

Jason Lee played Earl, a rougeish ne’er-do-well who turned over a new leaf after he was hit by a car. Earl vowed to make amends with all of the people he had hurt in his life, and so his amazing list was born. MY NAME IS EARL was abruptly cancelled in 2009 after its fourth season, and audiences were left wondering whether Earl would ever reach the end of his apology list. In a Reddit AMA, creator Greg Garcia said “I had always had an ending to Earl and I’m sorry I didn’t get the chance to see it happen”. Garcia’s new show, RAISING HOPE has plenty of connections with MY NAME IS EARL, with cast and characters turning up intermittently, but while RAISING HOPE is a great show (seriously), we miss Earl and would love to see him finally make amends on the big screen. There was mention of a movie by Jason Lee in 2011, so for now, we just have to cross our fingers and wait.

DON’T TRUST THE B—- IN APARTMENT 23

When goody two shoes June (Dreama Walker) moves to New York to pursue her dream job, her hopes are shattered when she realises the job no longer exists and she has moved in with Chloe (Krysten Ritter), a con artist party-girl whose best friend just happens to be James Van Der Beek. We love an odd couple comedy, and DON’T TRUST THE B—- had tons of scope and potential when it was abruptly cancelled last year. We’d love to see James Van Der Beek’s fictionalized version of himself finally catch a break and for Chloe and June to keep nagging one another on the big screen, but since the last eight episodes were streamed online and each of the main cast have moved on to other projects, this seems unlikely for the moment. We won’t give up just yet though.

Honourable mentions to: BORED TO DEATH – Schwartzman, Galifinakis and Danson was a trio made in TV heaven, and we would love to see our favourite pulp PI unravel the mystery of his sister on the big screen.
HEROES – Maybe they could correct the fact that the show became a horrific parody of itself.
DEADWOOD – We need to see Ian McShane rocking that incredible mustache on the big screen.
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER – Yeah we know it was all wrapped up neatly with a bow, but the stories have continued in the comics, and when we interviewed him last year, Anthony Stewart Head expressed interest in a movie, after Sarah Michelle Gellar said the same thing. Come on Joss, make it happen!

The VERONICA MARS movie is released in Irish cinemas from March 14th, 2014.
