As Avatar has shown over the last year, 3D is back with a vengeance. Though we can expect more pushing of the boundaries with this new technology, we can also expect the resurrection of some of the trashier horror features that originally hit screens back in the 70's. One of these is Piranha; the story of some exceptionally bad tempered, blood-thirsty fish. Expect blood and guts by the bucketload - it may not be clever but it's definitely fun!
Here are some other watery creature features to take a look at before viewing Piranha 3D.
The Host
In the movies, when you end up with some bad tempered creatures on your hands it's usually either the result of some unfortunate anomaly of nature (the return of something prehistoric is a big favourite) or else some unscrupulous humans have been messing around with something they shouldn't have! Korean movie The Host falls into the latter category as the pollution of the Han River by irresponsible scientists leads to some seriously bad side-effects for the amphibian population. One particularly large example begins to venture from his watery home to attack the local population. Joon-ho Bong is a must see for any monster movie fan and also has a nice sideline in political commentary about the presence of the American military in Korea.
Lake Placid
Just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water eh? If Jaws made many people terrified of setting foot into the sea, then Lake Placid does a good job of convincing you that lakes aren't all that safe either. The fictional Lake Placid in Main is being terrorised by not one but two 30 foot long crocodiles who have developed quite a taste for humans. On their tales are a motley crew of palaeontologists, law enforcement and an eccentric mythology professor all intent on either killing or capturing these beasts. A great cast includes Bill Pullman, Oliver Platt, Bridget Fonda and Brendan Gleeson but stealing the show is Betty White as local eccentric Delores Bickerman, who is firmly on the side of the crocodiles.
Deep Blue Sea
The scientists in Deep Blue Sea were just asking for trouble really weren't they? In an underwater research facility, a team are working to increase the brain power of a group of sharks with the eventual goal of harvesting cells that could be used in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. A noble cause but a dangerous endeavor. Once the sharks get a bit of smarts they soon decide they don't very much like being kept as test subjects and decide to make a bid for freedom. This is very bad news for the crew. Thomas Jane, LL Cool J and Samuel Jackson amongst others try to keep from being sharkbait...with varying levels of success.
