Video Interview : Maggie Gyllenhaal

Maggie Gyllenhaal talks about her role in the Dark Knight.

Maggie Gyllenhaal isn't a name you'd usually expect to see attached to a summer blockbuster. The actress is usually to be found among those smaller indie/cult projects - ‘Donnie Darko', ‘Secretary' and more recently 'Sherry Baby'. But if you are going to go blockbuster, there's no better place to start than with Christopher Nolan's ‘Dark Knight'!

We got a chance to talk to Maggie over the weekend about the film,
which has already toppled all box-office expectations. Here, the actress chats about her character Rachel Dawes - the love-torn interest of both Batman (Christian Bale) and Gotham's ambitious District Attorney Harvey Dent - and how she feels about taking over for Katie Holmes in 'The Dark Knight'.

Check back for more Dark Knight video interviews  coming this week!

'The Dark Knight' is currently showing at Irish cinemas everywhere, cinema times are available here on Movies.ie

She was great in the Dark Knight, didn't over play the role like Miss Tom Cruise did. Wonder if we'll see her again?

  • 30/07/2008 08:07:44 · TheDave

She was miles better than Crazy ol' purple handed Katie Holmes. She, like the film, was a real three dimensional adaptation. Though maybe I just have a soft spot for her. Secretary is an amazing film.

    Don't you mean, "The Sexretary"?

It's odd how she can bring so much more feeling and character to a relatively minor character.  Holmes was too much of a pip-squeek.

  • 30/07/2008 08:19:17 · TheDave

Minor, Minor, she aint Minor - she was a vital plot device! Dont you go boxin in Rachel Faulks!

  • 30/07/2008 09:54:37 · infusion

I understand what someone means when they say this was a minor role but when you hold it up against Katie Holmes you realise how how good an actor Gyllenhall is. Or maybe the script was so good this time round that a ventriloquists dummy could have done it

I said 'relatively' minor, relative to the three main guys.  She's a very important and good character, and I really enjoyed her performance, so don't let the word 'minor' take way from that!

That was a(nother) great interview - the interviewer always brings the best out of the actors and makes the giggle a bit too.

I thought she was great and after seeing her in TDK I wondered why they didn't cast her from the start in Batman Begins. The other one ruined it for herself by getting involved with Scientology - the career death knell for the acting community.

Another great interview. She mentioned his t-shirt at the beginning but he didn't respond in kind...

She's simply adorable in this clip...I'm slowly becoming a fan.

She was great in Sherry Baby...well worth checking out

  • 30/07/2008 16:16:49 · TheDave

Sherry Baby is a great role for her yeah, but man is that one depressing film. If it’s not heroin addiction, its molestation, if not that prison... She certainly brings a lot to the role, but it ain't no easy watch! I'm suprised so few people know her; she's actually part of another hollywood power couple: Peter Sarsgaard of Garden State .

They are the Brad and Angie of the Indie world!

  • 31/07/2008 15:37:01 · lamda

Oh Christ Sherry Baby! I found that quite dull - gritty indie cinema by numbers. She's deadly in Secretary. BUT! Every time I see her though I think to myself, get yourself a more supportive bra Maggie! Hmmm

  • 31/07/2008 18:37:05 · ging-grr

She's an incredible actress, she always brings a essence of reality to the characters. Been a fan since I saw her in the Secretary and thought she almost stole the show in Stranger Than Fiction and was delighted to hear she took the role of Rachel Dawes.

i can 100% tell you we won't be seeing her again.

how do i know this you ask? simple she was killed off in the dark knight

that's what changes harvey dent from the racheal loving criminal hating white knight

to the better part of two face.
