Say what you like about the Saw series (and many critics have!) but you have to admit its villain, Jigsaw, is one of the most fiendish ever committed to celluloid and he certainly has a talent for constructing elaborate and gruesome deaths by booby trap! The booby trap is the method of choice for the imaginative or the lazy villain; after all, once the initial set-up is done, they can just sit back and watch as their victims become the instruments of their own demise. Though we're already six films into the franchise, audiences continue to flock to the movies to see the latest booby traps that will befall the hapless victims
In the spirit of Jigsaw, this week we watch our step as we run down our top ten favourite booby trap movies!
1. Raiders of the Lost Ark
No self-respecting ancient treasure can show its face in the movies without some ingenious booby traps to help protect it. Since Indiana Jones made a career out of chasing these treasures the films are chock full of great booby trap moments. The most famous and parodied (our favourite being Bart chased by a Homer boulder in The Simpsons) has to be the giant boulder from Raiders of the Lost Ark. A lesser man would have been left a smear on the temple floor but not Indy!
2. The Goonies
The Goonies has a double helping of booby traps or as Data would call them, "booty traps." As they search for the treasure of One Eyed Willy they have to traverse some deadly traps while also leaving behind them some of their own to foil the Fratellis. Data is the orchestrator of these and he has a huge array of cunning tricks hidden inside that big trenchcoat of his to both set traps and to save himself.
