MOVIE SYNOPSIS
Adapted from Irish author John Boyne’s critically acclaimed internationally best-selling novel, THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS is an unforgettable story seen through the innocent eyes of Bruno, the eight-year-old son of the commandant at a concentration camp, whose forbidden friendship with a Jewish boy, Shmuel, on the other side of the camp fence has startling and unexpected consequences.

THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PYJAMAS is a fictional story that offers a unique perspective on how prejudice, hatred and violence affect innocent people, particularly children, during wartime. The book was first published in 2006 and spent 66 weeks at Number One on the Irish Book Charts. It was also a New York Times bestseller and the winner of 2 Irish Book Awards, Bisto Book of the Year, and the Que Leer Award, among other accolades. It's a very different angle on "this topic" though, it was originally a kids book so it'll be told from a childs eyes really.

thats not necessarily a bad thing, I dont think theres a film out there that will capture the whole story from the perspective of a child ?

I am really quite excited about this one, looks quite good!

Life Is Beautiful comes pretty close to capturing a concentration camp themed movie through the eyes of a child, worth seeing if you haven't already. It will make you bawl your eyes out.

  • 25/08/2008 12:21:35 · Brian Dennison

As it happens, Shane (that's right, I know you're real name) I will be in the country. I'm not going away till the 10th. I just thought that people that don't always get tickets deserve a chance too.

The Wackness was good. Distant at first but it really got in to the depth of the main characters. Brought me back to my teens, all those many years ago. Go & see it if you have a chance.

We saw Get Smart sfterwards, you should have come along...

Thanks for that, i will go and see it, to be honest i go to see everything!

I am completely ashamed to admit i saw wild child at the weekend and i loved it - am i sad or what ?! I saw Get Smart last week but i wasn't all that impressed. Then again, I wasn't a big fan of the tv show either so i should have known what i was letting myself in for.

By the way, ur a bit of an expert, any opinions on that new irish film 32A or have you seen it? Thanks!

  • 25/08/2008 12:53:55 · infusion

I didn't like the poster for 32A, but I'll probably go see it.

This film is unbelievable. You know in This is England when Milky gets beaten to within an inch of his life. It feels like that throughout this whole movie. It was an amazing night altogether. Hearing the author, director and cast speak was a great treat. You've really out-done yourselves this time movies.ie

Great film! ...and Ryan Tuberty was on top form!

Well what can I say, what an amazing experience.  Brilliant movie and the atmosphere was something else.  There were times where you could cut the atmosphere with a knife!  It was kinda cool celebrity spotting (so no a-listers) but still cool!  Sorry I didn't get to come say hello, was threatened with being sent on the bus if I didn't hurry!

    Thanks Movies.ie

was a fantastic movie. i am possibly one of only 3 people who haven't read the book - but know all about it from my wife who sobbed like a baby whilst reading it. but i found the movie profound, moving, and yet subtle - it kept things very innocent with just hints at the horrors happening around them.

my wife is polish and comes from lublin, which had a death camp (which has been preserved) that i have visited - sobering stuff especially standing in the "showers"....and to see it portrayed in this way - through the eyes of a child was powerful.

met rupert friend and the main man himself - signed the book for my wife, lovely guy.

anyways - thanks for the tickets - great night.

I was impressed at the cast being there, the younger guy is CUTE, can't recall his name. He looks better in the film with blonde hair, but 100% eye candy for a Thursday night.

What....no "Tuberty in racist slur" headline this morning.

Thanks once again to Movies.ie for what could seriously have been the best premier yet. the tension in he savoy last night was amazing. The complete silence at the very end of the movie while all the credits rolled was something I had never experienced before and really symbolised the effect the movie has on you and the respect for the seriousness of the subject matter.

I hadn't read the book either and in fact knew very little about the movie before seeing it last night, so had no idea what to expect.  I thought the movies was really well made and superbly acted, I particularly liked the fact that everything was viewed from the innocence of childs eyes, despite the fact that we knew better.....mad the topic all that more touching.

Excellent film, please go see it.

Last night was my first ever movie premiere and I have to say it was an amazing experience. I absolutely loved the film. Very thought-provoking and powerful stuff. The cast were all superb. At the start I felt a bit disconnected from the period due to the English accents and language, but it didn't take long to become completely absorbed in the story. The way the tension kept building up to the end had me on the edge of my seat, having never read the book. I've never seen an audience so engrossed and still during a movie. And the ending was completely devastating. Listening to the director and the author speaking and mingling with the celebrities was a real treat.

    Thank you so much movies.ie!
