Dinner for Schmucks

What's it about...
Paul Rudd stars as Tim, an up-and-coming analyst with a private equity firm who is invited by his sleazy bosses to their monthly tradition: a titular dinner, to which they bring freaks, weirdos and idiots, and a prize is presented to the winner.Desperate for a promotion, and for his girlfriend (Stephanie Szostak) to agree to marry him, Tim eventually finds the perfect candidate - Barry (Steve Carell), a collector of taxidermied mice who is so socially maladroit that he makes Carell's "Office" and "40-Year-Old Virgin" characters look like James Bond and Indiana Jones. But before the dinner can happen, the well-intentioned, but clueless Barry spends a full day inadvertently ruining Tim's life.

Going the Distance

What's it about...
Drew Barrymore's latest romantic comedy follows the story of Erin (Barrymore) and Garrett (played by Barrymore's former fella Justin Long), who fall for each other during a whirlwind summer romance in New York City. The pair decide to try the long-distance thing after only a couple of months, when Erin has to head back to her home in San Francisco. From here we follow the trials and tribulations of long distance relationships in a film which has been described as 500 Days of Summer meets There's Something About Mary.

The Runaways

What's it about..
.

Directed by photographer Floria Sigismondi and adapted from the book by Cherie Currie, The Runaways opens in 1975 when Bowie-obsessed 15-year-old Cherie (Dakota Fanning) is introduced to guitarist Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) by impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon). Despite feeling guilty about leaving her older sister Marie (Riley Keough - Elvis's granddaughter) to look after their alcoholic father (Brett Cullen), Cherie eagerly joins the band and is soon embarking on a gruelling schedule of tours and indulging in the usual sex, drugs and rock'n'roll shenanigans with a little experimental lesbianism thrown in.

Cyrus

What's it about.
..

John C. Reilly stars as John, a middle-aged lonely divorced guy who, as the film opens, gets dragged to a party by his remarried ex-wife (Catherine Keener) -- who remains his best friend. After a few clumsy, drunken passes at a variety of women, John encounters Molly (Marisa Tomei), an attractive single-mom who finds John's social awkwardness appealing. They hit it off, and quickly begin a tender new relationship. Problems soon arise in the form of Cyrus (Jonah Hill), Molly's twentysomething son, who has an off-puttingly close relationship to his mom. Soon the jealous Cyrus sets about trying to break them up, and John must figure out how to deal with this unhinged and unexpected rival.

Tamara Drewe

What's it about...

Based on Posy Simmonds' beloved graphic novel of the same name, this wittily modern take on the romantic English pastorale is a far cry from Hardy's Wessex. Tamara Drewe's present-day English countryside-stocked with pompous writers, rich weekenders, bourgeois bohemians, a horny rock star, and a great many Buff Orpington chickens and Belted Galloway cows-is a much funnier place. When Tamara Drewe sashays back to the bucolic village of her youth, life for the locals is thrown tail over teakettle. Tamara-once an ugly duckling-has been transformed into a devastating beauty (with help from plastic surgery). As infatuations, jealousies, love affairs and career ambitions collide among the inhabitants of the neighboring farmsteads, Tamara sets a contemporary comedy of manners into play using the oldest magic in the book-sex appeal.

pretty poor selection there. Dinner for Shmucks and The Other Guys if you really had to go to the cinema

  • Mr_Twist

Jesus... the is nothing worth watching this month

  • luluk

I agree, slim pickings this month. Cyrus should be good, though.

    Dinner For Schmucks
    The Runaways
    Savage
The Last Exorcism (I do love me some bad horror films)

But at the same time, seeing them on DVD wouldn't hurt me.

Think it's a month to see Scott Pilgrim!

Not a very exciting month I think. But the Irish Film Institute is showing great movies this month: M, Metropolis, Dr Strangelove, From Here To Eternity...

When does Resident Evil come out?!

The Other Guys sounds like fun. Going the Distance, apparently respects moviegoer's intelligence...and The Town is excellent, I hear. I may just end up watching those on the DVD. The IFI schedule sounds much more enticing.

  • lulalah

I'll check out The Runaways but I've been waiting a LONG time for Resident Evil to come out (still waiting for Leon to make an appearance).

  • seamyfox

We should have another movies.ie night out???

  • lulalah

Indeed we should. I shall be going to see Resident Evil when it comes out so if anyone wants to come along, feel free.perhaps a beer before hand?
